FM antenna amplifier with aftermarket head unit

I've been trying to figure out just why the FM reception is so poor with an aftermarket head unit.
The car is a Gransport with the integrated front windshield antenna and FM amplifier.
My guess is that the antenna amplifier is powered from the antenna jack in the Becker head unit.
Indeed, using a multimeter shows +8V DC from the centre conductor of the Becker antenna socket, which I suspect powers up the FM amplifier.
I purchased a PC5-52 Signal Separation ISO - ISO adaptor but it sends +12V DC into the antenna cable.
Given the 4V difference, I'm reluctant to use it in case it'll burn out the FM antenna amplifier.
Does anyone know if it is safe to use 12V? Does anyone know the voltage rating for the FM amplifier?

Cheers
John
