From Gransport to Granturismo S

Hi All,

I am currently contemplating a move from my lovely GS over to a 4.7 GranTurismo S. There are various reasons for the change but mainly i am after a newer car which i can use more often throughout the year. I have also always wanted a GranTurismo ever since i first saw one on the road!

Now here is where i need some advice, i am leaning towards an Auto because the ZF box is a work of art and as mentioned i am going to be using it more on a daily basis. I am also looking forward to not having to complete costly clutch changes (something i know only too well from the GS). My budget is likely going to point me towards an earlier 4.7 S. Am i right that the main difference between the auto i want and the MS Shift is the exhaust? I will happily tinker with the exhaust afterwards to make it sound as it should so this not something that concerns me. Is there any other differences? I guess i can still drive the auto in manual mode if i am after a sportier drive? Are there any other options that are must haves to look out for?

Once i am happy about the car i am after i will see what i will get in terms of a p/x but i guess i will likely require a private sale in which case here will be the first place i post!

Thanks,

Stefano

Correct, the main difference between the auto and MC Shift is the exhaust and side skirts. If you want the Oval tips on the ZF Auto model then you could search for one with the Sport pack which has the side skirts and oval tipped twin exhausts. I much prefer that look to the standard auto box S car. My advice is test drive both to get a feel for the auto vs MC shift as you are coming from the CC which is much more engaging than the ZF box even in paddle mode/SPORT manual.

Good choice, you will be smitten with whichever you go with.

Will you get the nice throttle blips when you have the zf in manual mode and downshift? Ive driven the f type jag with the zf and loved it so hoping for a similar experience in the GTS

my understanding as well: sport 2012+ has the big blips as well as gear hold (i.e. bounce off redline). thought they were slightly faster shifts too, but I could be wrong.

When buying mine, I drove both and definitely preferred the MC-S but it is very much a personal preference once you have driven them. The obvious downside to the MC-S is the cost of the clutch replacement but you do gain the skirts, the different wheels, the lip spoiler on the boot, the black detailing on the headlamps and the oval exhaust tips.
Option wise, I would look for front sensors (it has a very long nose), comfort pack and Bose. Skyhook is a personal choice but you will find it on around 90% of MC-S.
If you do decide on a MC-S or want to try one out, let me know as mine will be sale in the very near future.
Good luck in your search

WHS plus the bigger paddles.

The noise (blips etc) was incomparable on test drive and the general feel of the car. The clutch should last 40-50,000 miles so if you buy one with low miles or one with it recently done it shouldn't be a problem.
Having said that - if you add up all the smiles from the downshifts and noise that emanates...I think the cost of the clutch is worth it.

Drove both and ended up with an MC Shift in the end haha!! It is like night and day vs the gransport gearbox. So happy with it!

Good stuff! Now we want the lowdown on this MCS please!
I, however, have no intention of changing to a GT, or more to the point a GC as I need a 2-seater convertible in my life! But the sound of an MCS... ohhhhhhh!!!!

I keep forgetting that it is a Ferrari F1 box with superfast shift programme from the 599 GTB when sport mode is engaged. It makes the CC box feel very clunky indeed.

In sport mode, when its warm, i would go as far as saying it feels like a double clutch system. Going from a GS to an MC has made me take to the new gearbox instantly. Pics to follow soon!

Glad you got what you want. Get then whilst you can!

I struggle with the thought that it's a great gearbox but in the wrong car. The GranTurismo handles reasonably well but it weighs 1880kg wet, is really big and actually not that fast in modern terms. Anyway that's why I went for the auto. For me the MC would suit a smaller lighter car which is why they should have produced a shorter wheel base, 300kg lighter two seater as part of the project.

I'll take you out with me on track and we'll see what you say then about the MC box and how nimble it is. It's not that heavy a car really when you consider they fit similar boxes to M5, RS6 etc...
