Gearbox behaving strangely

So at last the roads were dry enough for me to take my GS for a spin today, been standing for three weeks because i don't want it getting covered in grit and salt.

Everything was fine except for the gear selection at one junction i stopped at. I had put the car in neutral and when i pulled the up paddle to select first there was a longer delay that usual at which the car selected 2nd gear before then finding 1st gear a second or so later. The previous time i drove it i had the same thing happen but that time it didn't find 1st gear at all and i pulled off in 2nd gear. There are no warning lights on and the F1 pump is priming when i unlock the car and open the door as usual.

A new clutch was fitted 4k ago at a main dealer. Any advice on what the issue may be?

Did you fully stop? Sometimes it gets confused if you are still moving and it selects second...lading to lots of clutch slip and not a nice return to movement.

Yes in both instances the car was stationary at traffic lights.

Its probably just where its been stood for a while, have you had the battery turned off?

They always take a while to settle down and throw up some oddities.

I've decided these gearboxes don't like being idle. Mine was left for a couple of weeks over Christmas and on the first trip out it behaved like a sulky child. Slow in making up it's mind, missing changes and selecting neutral when slowing down for junctions and roundabouts and other general mishaps - what I would call throwing it's dummy out of the pram.

Now mine is due a clutch as it is currently sitting on 53k with no evidence of it ever having been done so I wasn't too surprised but after driving it a lot more recently it has gone back to it's normal mode of doing what it's told most of the time. Hopefully it will remain as is, I really would like to get another year out of the clutch that Emblem reckoned would need to be replaced within 5k miles of me getting it that is already 5k ago and it's still hanging in there.

My advice is take it out and thrash it, the kill or cure method. Same applies to children ;)

I was in the habit of using the battery kill switch but recently i have preferred to use my battery charger every few weeks instead. So the battery has been on the whole time and is fully charged.

From what you have all said it sounds like i may be getting worried over nothing. Unlikely to be going out for another drive this week now that the snow is on its way but i will take it out for a spirited drive when there is a window of dry weather again and see what happens. I guess reading talk of collapsed clutch fingers on the pressure plate and such like got me all worked up!

So all has been well with my transmission since this thread until today. Seems like the car has decided it wants some TLC again and had a bit of an Italian wobbly. Failed the MOT on park brake efficiency and emissions, but more worryingly on the way home when i was in slow moving traffic in first gear three times i had to force neutral manually because the clutch was not disengaging when approaching idle speed and the car kept moving forwards. This behaviour was accompanied by a strange metallic grinding noise.

Managed to get home and there are no warning lights on the dash or fault codes that i can read with my OBD reader but now every time i turn on the ignition and switch it off again (regardless of whether i start the car or not) exactly 5 seconds after turning off the ignition there is what i would describe as a creaking noise coming from the rear of the car, like a mechanical part that is moving that is poorly lubricated. It is transmission related for sure. Any ideas guys? Clutch was replaced by main dealer at 57k, car now on 66k.

What is the % wear?...I am aware that the GS can suffer clutch tang failure even at low % which is a real bummer for the owner.

From what im told it can appear at high 30s to mid 40s

I only know it had a new clutch 9k ago never had a wear reading taken. I'm sure they will take one when they look at it later this week. Was hoping the dreaded clutch tang failure wasn't a possibility for obvious reasons!

Does sound like the tangs have gone I am afraid.

Needs an expert to look at it.

Who sold you that piece of £$£% ?

I'm with the others on this Jay, sounds like clutch tangs to me too. It may just be one of those things.

So i got the car back today. There were no issues in the diagnostic checks so they fitted a new brake switch as a precaution and tweaked the clutch settings. Drove fine on the way home and the clutch engagement was a lot more positive too. So my wallet lives to fight another day for now!
