Actually Ken Bruce is the most listened to show:

<quote>
Bruce attracted 8.4 million listeners a week, beating the 7.4 million people who tuned in to Zoë Ball’s breakfast show. Other mid-morning shows that are reaching more people than their station’s breakfast programmes include those of LBC’s James O’Brien, TimesRadio’s Matt Chorley and Classic FM’s Alexander Armstrong, according to analysis by the audio consultancy Hallett Arendt.

That article is from May 2022. In the most recent figures it was Zoe Ball.

I questioned the BBC hiring criteria and speculated that it was based on other factors as opposed to being solely based on merit, as I think it should be, regardless of their gender, race or sexual orientation. That should be the case for any role in any organisation.

The Radio 2 breakfast show has traditionally had the highest listener numbers of any U.K. radio show, so im not disputing what you state. What is a more relevant measurement IMO are her average audience numbers compared to her predecessors and whether she has grown her market share or shrunk it. Compared to Evans in that slot, it’s the latter. Time will tell once the Wright and Bruce replacements get into their stride.

I don’t think we will ever see eye to eye on this but I’m not going to fall with you over it nor was it my wish to cause you offence because of some words you wrote on a page.

Not like Chris to give out information without fact checking as that's normally me :)

Well, TBH the fact was correct. The implication that 'The Radio 2 breakfast show has traditionally had the highest listener numbers of any U.K. radio show,'

Not strictly accurate. ICBA to get more up to date figures but certainly today's papers led with Bruce being the most listened to:

<quote>
Bruce has emphasised that this was entirely his decision. That’s in no doubt, because any radio station would be insane to get rid of him voluntarily. He is, by some distance, the most popular radio broadcaster in the country, with nearly nine million weekly listeners, and currently at the helm of one of the most popular radio shows in Europe
</quote>

But I have no dog in this fight so......

That is related to the point i was making. The Breakfast show used to have around 11M listeners at the height of Evans tenure and did have the largest audience. It did drop to around 9M by the time he left for Virgin, but still higher than since Zoe Ball took it over and it hemoraged listeners so Ken Bruce has overtaken it. So when BBC bosses were seeking a replacement for Evans, did Ball get the job on a meritocratic basis alone, or did other factors influence that appointment. If the former, then the significant loss of audience would indicate she was a poor choice.

If you were running a commercial organisation and lost c 20% of your customers, I don’t think you would be judged as a roaring success.

Radio listener figures are measured in a very antiquated, manual process which is extremely flawed. Take the publicised numbers with a pinch of salt as they are based on a small sample and amplified to represent the population. The pattern of listenership is broadly OK for larger stations only.

Yeah I did RAJAR for a couple of years. It's going to be highly variable

Out of curiosity what were Wogans figures? I realise it will always drop as people use different sources of "entertainment" now.

BBC had to fill their diversity quota, so out with white male straight stale DJ’s like Evans, Bruce, Wright and Mayo and in with women like Ball and Cox, and gay men like Scott Mills and hit the bullseye with Richie Anderson who is gay and an ethnic minority. Woke Bingo!

All the old guard are moving to commercial radio where the key drivers are listeners =
Advertising revenue, so at my station we are all mainly still old white straight men. Our breakfast presenter is gay and we have a couple of girls on at the W/E, but it’s all about listener numbers, not box ticking View attachment 110585

I had no idea there was another local station up and running! We were semi-regular listeners of KLFM before it's demise, so will definitely give this a try.
Greatest hits radio just isn't local enough when you want it to be.

Away from local radio, for the last decade, I've regularly alternated between radio2 and absolute radio, with occasional Virgin and planet rock days.
We're a household that always has the radio on in the background in the kitchen.

Regarding the BBC DJs, hasn't it always just been the case that the popular ones just move up the numbers with age?
I'm sure most of the radio 2 DJs of the last 20 years, we're radio1 DJs when I was a youngster, which lead my to transition from radio 1 to 2 as I aged also.

Many of the old KLFM tram that originally set that station up are now at KL1. We don’t have an FM frequency yet but are on digital and also you can stream via the website or Ap.

My show is 7 to 9PM on Sundays and we have a catch up feature on the website, so you can stream it anytime. I need all the listeners I can get Sam!
