GRANCABRIO MC IN STANMORE HAS ISSUE - HELP PLEASE!!

Hello! New member with a 2016 Maserati Grancabrio MC Shift..

23k Miles, lots of carbon on it (Evo Packs) & i absolutely LOVE it...

BUT.. it has some issues!! Owned since last summer but only recently made aware of this forum hence joined today!!

So i hardly use it (mainly for a few summer cruises around the chilterns) and its been sitting around on a trickle charger for a few months, which has highlighted some issues.

1. A rattle/rubbing noise coming from either the suspension or the roof. i have taken a video and hopefully you can see the video through this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UU6mzbAZM80hAnzOfELbrO7FZE1OyU8f/view?usp=share_link . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2. Condensation in Boot: i will summarise what is going on to make easier reading:

- noticed when the weather got colder, not in summer (although car was driven more in summer)
- Car has been to Scuderia London where they checked for leaks and cleared drain holes which is under roof flap, not in boot. Problem still persists. unknown if there are drain holes in boot, any advice would be appreciated
- have read Chenders post about water in boot on his '11 GC and mine is not filling up like his.
- I have tried checking the rubber boot seal itself which goes around the rim, and even placed tissue paper all round it and tucked it into the creases and washed the entire car and it was completely dry!
- I have now stripped off the boot lid lining (as you can see in the pictures) and tried the tissue roll water test, of which no water seems to be getting through anywhere, and condensation is literally everywhere on the top of that boot lid.
- i have tried garaging the car and still condensation is a huge problem (left in a garage for 3 weeks and still mould building in the boot linings.
- I have tried putting car moisture traps of amazon in the boot, and they are getting full but condensation is building, and its building fast!!
- NO water is visible in the lower part of the boot, its all only at the top on the boot lid itself and mould builds in the corners closest to the wheel arches.
Please help if anyone has a resolution to this condensation problem, i cannot see anywhere where water is leaking into the boot and have tried garaging the car to see if it is rainwater which it appears not! Im literally pulling my hair out!
Hopefully the photos will help and thank you in advance for your responses!

Hi Amish. Beautiful car! Well done. Buy an anti-condensation bag from Amazon, maybe two. That'll help for a start.

More responses to follow.

Not sure if the GC is the same as a GT, but I found on my old GT the boot got damp.
One thing we found was that the water in the boot channel is designed to run under trims that attach against the rear lights. Removed these and they were clogged with crud, cleaned and replaced and problem went away.
No idea why this would have caused the problem unless water was backing up and leaking though the loom.
Anyway, worth a look. Each side is held in by three push in clips, so a two minute job.
Good luck

Weird...does look more like condensation than intrusion from here. Are any of the antennae/other components on the boot lid warm/hot to the touch...?

I havent looked at that but its definitely an interesting thought... the only thing that was in there was a trickle charger and i had to stick an extension lead into the boot and then plug it in but i doubt that was very hot, and it was used intermittently not all the time..

thanks for this, my next exploration route is going to be to take those out, and strip out all the carpets from the boot to see if there is any water anywhere or any drain holes which are not visible when the cladding is on. Unless someone on this forum has had the identical issue and can give me the answer loll

If it's condensation only, then there's something creating a temp/humidity differential between the trunk and the environment...but can't hurt checking all...including weather seal on the ragtop.

That really does appear to be condensation. How odd. I don't recall if the GT battery vents to air or not? Might that be venting moist gas?

If it was me I'd strip everything out. Dry the structure it completely and see if it happened again. It may just be that temperature differences in your location is causing it (I had condensation on my plastic garage light switches the other day)

Also, did I read somewhere that water can come in through a seam in the boot floor, but of course that would only happen if driving in the rain.

Oh, also the GT there was a chuck of sponge stuck to the rear panel that was holding water.

I bet that's it, Chris. I totally just skipped over that, thinking it too obvious. @amishb1 please check and see if your battery is vented...

Surely a battery wouldn’t create so much condensation……..
I agree it seems odd...but (again, from Leftpondia and viewing pics/story on the interwebs) it sure seems like it's something inside the trunk that's causal. Battery, air gap, overheating electrons...

And I have seen corrosion form from unvented/improperly vented batteries...

I had similar occasionally when boot was cold and then back boxes heat up boot and then cold again.

You have a cold boot lid, moist air from an open boot (charge cable) and then hot exhaust.

...wondering about condition differential in garage v outdoors; I read the above as having the issue in both settings. Including when just sitting for a couple of weeks in a garage? And whether the trickle charger was being used outdoors as well as in...? Reading too fast while doing too many other things...and being on the other side of the ocean from the car in question...leaves me at a decided disadvantage when trying to be helpful. Sometimes!

I always garage mine. It isn't heated or insulated, but is ventilated. It gets cold but not damp. The air will be cold and humid no doubt.

Here the relative humidity fluctuates...in a wide range of 100 to 200%...
