Gransport Exhaust Options

Hi

I'm currently looking for a Gransport and have been wondering what options may be available to tweak the performance a little. One obvious option would be upgrading the exhaust system. Do any of the available systems provide any tangible performance advantages?

I wouldn't be after anything wacky but a 5% or so gain would be attractive. I'd also ideally want to be able to put things back to standard if need be.

Cheers

Paul

Thanks both.

Will have a further search/read. Be interested to see what performance gains might be possible. Any feel as to whether there might be from your impressions of your system?

Just X-pipe = 0% just a better sound...tbh I suspect the 'performance' gains are purely hopeful in the vast majority of cases. I have seen members spend a grand on re-maps only to find the extra 50bhp gives no difference when racing a standard car.

I've got rid of big, clunky, restrictive cats, fitted better flowing, larger bore manifolds and improved the whole flow of the exhaust dramatically. I'm not going to guess what the difference is, but will report after the second rolling road runs take place. The car certainly feels quicker!

I'm pretty sure that Grinzzz will confirm that the 'performance' gains I got from my car are more than merely 'hopeful'.

Yes, although I would doubt anything was down to the tubes, gains there are mostly placebo effect on 90% of cars, although since I didn't do anything to mine in that respect I could be wrong. I think you said you had a re-map as well? Judging from the way you were pulling away on the straight I'd guess somewhere between 40 and 60 bhp up on the standard engine.

Whatever you've had done it made it faster on the straights but **** slow in the bends :)

Nah. I was taking it easy, I didn't want to scare Newton! An engine is an air pump, so the faster you can get more air into, and out of, it the more power it will make. The standard cats are appalling and restrict the gas flow which, in turn, restricts power. All the remap does is put more petrol into the engine but the benefits are greater with better airflow.

Agree with that, if you have a remap exhausts can provide gains. For 90% of cars an exhaust on it's own will do nothing.

I replaced the secondary cats and central resonator with a custom X-pipe, not sure if it has made much BHP increase but it makes a great noise

Going on a diet will also increase performance! But that's not as easy as fitting some shiny new pipes and a re-map, PIM update etc!

Better not show that to my wife, get enough grief about shedding some pounds as it is!!

Power comes from flow, the more flow you can get through the engine in general the more power it will develop. Improved breathing, flow through the engine and improved exit through the exhaust will deliver the power. Changing anyone of these components can make small differences, especially if the manufacturer used components to restrict flow on purpose, but big change will need all three.

My 155 Q4 has had changes to inlet (bigger turbo, uprated injectors, uprated fuel pump), engine (remap, matched ports), exit (free flow exhaust, cat removal) and it makes about 60% more power than when it came out of the factory. The downside is it cost a fortune over the years and is as temperamental as any woman during that time of the month.

But the best things to make it faster were the cheapest, coil over suspension to corner faster, bigger brakes to slow down later and most of all (the free bit) learn how to drive it properly.

The Spyder i just leave as it is
