Gransport steering creak

Evening all

I've searched various threads on this topic and seen suggestions ranging from knackered steering to knackered clutch, so thought I would describe my own symptoms and see if anyone had any similar experience.

My '05 GS has an developed an unexplained creak from the front end. It appears to be localised on the driver's side and the symptoms are as follows:
  • Creaking occurs when you make slight movements of the wheel from left to right when stationary or moving very slowly;
  • Only happens at speeds below, say, 10mph;
  • Can be heard inside and outside the car and felt (very slightly) through the brake pedal;
  • The noise appears to increase in volume and frequency the longer you run the car i.e. won't be noticeable after a short commute into work but is pretty obvious after a 90 min motorway drive to Manchester like the one I've just undertaken.
I've had creaky steering in the recent past which was diagnosed as a shortage of power steering fluid due to a leaking radiator. This has since been fixed (after a 4 week wait for the part!) and the steering fluid level appears to be static, so I'm thinking the fault may lie with a steering component closer to the driver's side front wheel. I am, however, clueless as to what it might be.

Don't suppose anyone else has experienced a similar fault in the past? All help gratefully received.

MY 3200GT does the same,It's only when your manouvering and when the steerings nearly on full lock
I've checked everthing...It could well be the pump or even the rack but theres no play or leaks anywhere.

Steering rack joint, track rod end, bush or wheel bearing would be my guess. FWIW, I would start with the wheel bearing and work inwards.

The bushes will be noisy if it is not being driven for long periods but check all the above too...

My initial thought was lower arm bushes (to chassis).

Get it up on a ramp (not a lift) and replicate the fault with someone under the car, won't take long to diagnose it.

Thanks all. Will try and get it up on a ramp in the next couple of days.

Interestingly, have just been out this morning and started the car up to check. No creaking at the moment, which confirms that it comes on over time. Suggests to me that it's something expanding as the miles rack up. Odd.

Hi Paul,

Don't worry - you're not alone: for months I suffered the same irritating creak from the o/s/f suspension of my MY05 GS, and I ended up replacing many of its parts. Eventually the Autoshield boys sorted it out, though, typically, the noise magically disappeared whenever I surrendered the car for them to test! The good news is that it's not serious (though it sounds awful - and so embarrassing). Why not give Marios a call?

Good luck!
Froddy
PS Just looked through bills - think it was a lower wishbone replacement which finally fixed it
