OK I have this now, you have a broken clutch cover and the bent Spring tangs are rubbing against either the clutch plate or the clutch bearing or the clutch is slipping, that would be the hissing sound.

I am 100% sure it is this.

For closure, Conaero was 100% on the money. See photo which shows collapsed fingers of pressure plate. image.jpg

Does anyone know if anything predisposes to this? The clutch & flywheel were replaced less than 20000 km ago. Flywheel looked pristine. Clutch had plenty of life with no scorch marks or significant glossing.
Can anything be done to reduce the chance of this happening?

As you can see from your photo above, its not a single tang that has broken but a breakage somewhere at the base of 4 of the tangs. You would have to take it apart to see what the failure was. If intact the 4 or 5 tangs are bent then this would point to excess pressure being applied to that portion of the diaphragm but seeing is it spins at crank revolutions, its not an alignment or balancing issue it more just a cheap french part that is not up to the job.

If you want to remedy this, the only option I see you as having is to fit the clutch cover from a F430. I was told initially that this also happens in the F430 but then a chat with Voicey the other day contradicts this so maybe this is the answer.

You can see that your cover is the later type and has the tell tale drill holes around the circumference where it has been fully balanced at the factory.

If the clutch part has failed as in broken within 24 months, the manufacture is responsible for its replacement under EU law (grab it while you can).
