Granturismo S, Sport Mode when starting

It's not a problem which will always happen. When it does, it's bloody awful! Parking is dangerous and doing anything smoothly is impossible. Trying to look cool or suave, challenge enough at the best of times, is futile.

Anyway, if yours does misbehave at least you now know what might help.

Have you learnt the dark art of avoiding that terrible jerkiness which plagues these cars when you first start off, Richard? The kind that make you look like a complete buffoon? If not, here it is: slowly press the acceleratopr to the floor three or four time before you start the engine. And then start. Apparently no one knows why it solves the jerkiness problem, even Maserati. But it does.

Hey Adam I just read on another thread where you state to turn on the ignition and then do the trick. You forgot to tell me this.

Well I just tried it and it was amazing, the car was totally smooth in forward and also in reverse - I really hope this is real and not just a fluke because it was a DRAMATIC difference! Now I can say thanks for the tip!

Also - does it make the exhaust louder?? It sounded amazing, so much so that my girlfriend said that it can't be road legal, it sounds like a track racing car?

I am really hoping it works next time I try it.

Richard, hi. I do it with the key in the ignition but not turned. Maybe I should have the ignition actually on... Always seems to work ok for me. Regardless, I really should pay more attention to myself.

Shouldn't make any difference to the exhaust - only sport mode or a different exhaust would so that.

Let us know how you get on.

It is amazing how this little trick works.............we use it around the dealership everyday........and no one from Maserati knows why it works.

And stalling is possible...............ive even done it myself!

Do you turn the ignition on and then press the accelerator or accelerator and then start? I do the latter and it seems to work ok. I think the critical thing is that when the driver's door is open the car assumes it will be started imminently and so it starts priming stuff and generally waking up. So there is life in the beastie at that point and logic says that pressing the accelerator would do *something*.

Adam, I just found the other post I read in another thread and it was in fact by sjc, he wrote

this works with the MC-shift cars, and hopefully will do teh same with yours....
When starting the car, turn ignition to 11 (i.e. where all the warning lights come on) and then press the accelerator to the floor (twice) slowly, then start the car...you'll be amazed at the difference!

As long as I'm not trying to reverse into the garage, I like the jerkiness especially if you've got sport engaged. The noise the exhaust makes while the engine's trying to decide what to do's like something evil preparing to leave the pit lane. Maybe I'm more inclined to let my imagination get the better of me.

Hi guys, sorry for bringing out this old thread, but as a quite new owner I'm full of questions.

Did someone notice, if this trick with a few times pedal to the floor actually works in the way you need to press the pedal a few times, or is it enough if you simply wait for the dash lights to go out.
I've read somewhere else that pushing the pedal is just a trick that makes you wait for the dash lights to go out, and therefore the car makes all the startup procedures before starting...clutch calibrates itself,...
I have tried both options and found no difference.
I'm interested in your experiences.

In my experience stamping on the pedal makes no difference whatsoever, I just turn the ignition on and wait for the lights to go out and it works fine every time.

It’s enough to wait for the lights to go out. Pressing the accelerator a few times (which I used to do) does nothing except occupy you while the lights go out. It’s the time gap between starting the electrics and ignition which gives the various systems time to “prime” and eliminates the jerkiness.

Like others mine is inconsistent in terms of starting in or out of sport / auto etc.As for jerkiness, I find the MC is harsh when manoeuvring particularly in reverse, but the “ignition on till lights go out, then start” makes a massive difference and saves the embarrassment of the kangaroo effect.

Well worth it though - sport MC 7000+ rpm -

Question. I do not have valves but the exhaust is always louder on start up and then quietens after 20 seconds or so. What does this?

The engine will run a bit richer and at a slightly higher idle for the first little while. Also the exhaust will have a different resonance when it is cold.

My car is noticeably louder on start up and then quietens down (a little bit) afterwards.

I turn the ignition on, accelerator to the floor (no pumping) until the lights go out, then foot on the brake and twist to start. Works for me.

I tried waiting for the lights to go out without touching the accelerator, and it was still jerky.

I like it loud!
