GS gearbox/clutch issues

Hi all,

I'm hoping some of you can shed some light on the situation. I dropped my GS off for a service recently and got a call saying that it had failed the self learn on the gearbox with the error "selection error due to adjacent thresholds overlapping" and then wouldn't get past first gear. Tried the self learn again and then it passed. The mechanic took it for a test drive and reported everything was ok. I come to pick up the car and driving it immediately felt different. There was no problem getting into reverse at this stage, but taking off there was a lot of slip and then with constant throttle position the engine would rev out and it felt like the clutch suddenly engaged. This coupled with gear changes that would take upwards of 5 seconds (in sport mode with a DBW module) made me take the car straight back to the mechanic. It was at this point that reverse selection would take a while before being completely unable to select reverse at all and would just clunk around for a bit before giving up. When selecting first the car will CLUNK into first which is unusual. The engine will also rev a little upon gear selection when at a standstill as well.

Putting the tester back on the clutch position came back in the negatives, but after another relearn it righted itself but didn't fix the problem. There is a NaN (not a number) reading on one of the parameters but I can't remember which one. One of the other Aussies reckons it could be a collapsed pressure plate but I thought I could ask here as well.

Thanks!

Hum, one of two things I recon, do a battery reset, turn it off for 20 mins or I suspect the clutch cover tangs have collapsed, how old is the clutch and who is the garage it's with?

For any garage tic release a car in this state concerns me greatly.

PM me if you don't wish to name and shame them.

I tried a 5 min battery reset when I was with them, same problem. I get the feeling that is coincidentally timed as I had no noticeable problems getting it into reverse when I picked it up, and the mechanic said it performed well on it's test run. Is a collapsing pressure plate a semi-gradual event? I can't recall the age of the clutch, but it was at 20% wear according to the pre-service readings and the car is in for it's 90,000k (ish, it's in a bit early) service.

The clutch reading means pretty much nothing so I would ignore that for now, the mileage and age is the more important factor so you need to find that out, maybe contact Maserati or the dealer or even the previous owner.

Does the pump at the back of the car prime when you unlock and open the drivers door?

Other than that throw it back at the dealer and state that the problem did not exist when you gave them the car so its something they have done and should fix it.

Agreed its **** at happened to me on my last GS.

I think Maserati need to accept responsibility for sub standard parts, it's not like they are cheap, quite the reverse.

Maybe contact Valeo for their view of it.

Wonder how old these were........the newer versions surely have been lasting much longer wear wise......is collapsing come in the new ones too?

1 vehicle has had the clutch replaced twice - 2nd clutch would be maybe 1-2 yrs old

Others not sure about age but another had average kms

Task in itself - this company is huge - just chk their web site and narrow the production sites to power trains.

Sent a message for a contact - I live in hope

Educate me, in the pictures one or several out of the 18 'fingers' are lower, is that the failure of the pressure plate?
I know more about auto gearboxes, never have to 'play' with a manual gearbox!

Yes, they are basically collapsed or bent on the fixing point.
