GS Hot Start issues

So I've been driving the GS for a week and it has thrown up its first problem, I got an EML yesterday then today I stopped briefly and when I went to restart it tried but wouldn't catch, after leaving it 5 minutes it started I then went to the gym and when I left it started perfectly but when I got home I turned it off then went to restart and it didn't want to know

From checking recent receipts for the car it seems the previous owner had the issue and Meridien thought they had fixed it by replacing the airflow meter and water temp sensor, the car was also serviced about 800 miles ago

I've done a search and found a few where people have had the same issue but nobody ever posted what was done to fix it

Any help/advice really appreciated

Hi BRR,
Are both cooling fans working, does the temp get over halfway, do the oil lights flash on at all..?? It's obviously heat related as it's OK when cooled down.

My money is on the TDC crank sensor, classic for hot start issues. It's cheap and easy to replace, I would give that a whirl first.

Also check your relays for the fuel pump, they stick as they get old.

A way to check is next time it does it, open the bonnet and press the valve one each of the fuel rails to see if you have fuel pressure. The fuel should jet out under high pressure.

Oh, just check your immobiliser key light has gone out on the dash its an easy one to miss. Lock then unlock the car and try again.

Morning all,

Started the car first thing this morning and it was fine however although it was about -3 the cooling fans kicked in immediately when i started the car.

shortly after starting off (about 3 miles) i stopped for fuel, when i went to restart the car it didn't want to know, the starter motor was working hard but it wouldn't catch, after leaving it 10 minutes and then having numewrous tries it started and i carried on my 25 mile journey to work. on the journey the temperature only got up to just past the marker between 50 & 90, so i presume about 70, i guess it should be closer to 90?

had a look for the fuel rail valves but can't see them, is there a diagram?

Immobiliser light is definitely out

I think i'll replace the fuel pump relay, does anybody know the part number and i presume eurospares is the place to buy it? same for the TDC crank sensor, i think i'll get that replaced

thanks for all the help

Brett

Spoke to Meridien who were of little help so called Migiliore cars in Bromsgrove as they're pretty local to me and they said they had seen the issue quite regularly and it was typically a fault in the ECU where it was picking up the wrong temperature, they say they rarely have to replace any parts to fix it and are confident it will be quite a straightforward job, only downside is i can't get the car in with them until the 8th as they're pretty busy and it being Easter etc

It does sound to be temperature related and the engine will run a bit cooler in the current climate. Let's hope it's a simple reset of the ECU and cheap fix.

Also worth considering the fuel vapour valve

A well known fault causing hot start issues especially just after filling up with fuel

Had this fixed on warranty by Dick Lovett, after I told them what i thought it was based on a search on this very forum

No problems since

Hi Brett,

I had exactly the same symptoms as you and it turned out to be the ECU.This was fixed and it completely solved the problem.

I got an EML yesterday ...

This means you should have a code stored. Why not buy/borrow and EODB II diagnostics tool and do a read - might get a rough idea of the problem to back up some of the proposed explanations.

Other outside contenders could be engine temp sensor (theromostat), and struggling battery, although I wouldn't expect CEL light for the latter.

And if it is indeed the ECU, then the '5 beeps' thread shows that David Askew has one for sale for a very reasonable 250GBP.

Any recommendations on an EOBD reader? i anticipate warning lights being a relatively regular feature of Maserati ownership

Other than the slight issue with it the car is great, i absolutely love it

here's a few (not very good) pics

BRR , you should first get your car on an SD3 tester and if the fault is temperature fault it will tell you.
And first replace the temperature sensor and thermostat , that is provided there is no fault on your fan resistor
If you need any more information you can call me and I will do my best to help 0161 8813463 or 07785994940

Hi Marios, thanks for your advice it's most appreciated. I think the temp sensor has been replaced. The car is in at Migiliore cars on Saturday but if they can't fix it I'll be in touch

Cheers
