Hello,

Tried to fit my towing eye but can't get it to screw in due to road dirt / rust. Looks like it has never been installed.

Going to order a set of taps to clean the thread up, I have measured M16 x 2mm, can anyone confirm this is correct before I order some or had similar problem?

Cheers Greg

(By the way I haven't broken down, so not desperate!)

Hi Greg, I think you are right there; M16 x 2.0 is standard coarse thread, shouldn't be difficult to find a tap to fit.

It's a common issue, and not worth worrying too much about, each time mine was hauled into the back of a low loader (or across the carpark at a track) the tow rope was just threaded through the place where the eye screws into...saved screwing it in, and by the look of it I wouldn't trust it not to snap!

Yes the tow point does look quite weak. Glad the problems are not just my GS!

I do like everything to work as it should so will buy a set of taps and report back the correct size.

Just to confirm the thread is M16 x 2mm.

I have cleaned the threads up now so the tow eye fits.

If anyone wants to borrow the tap PM me and I'll stick it in the post.

I have had to use mine once or twice on the AC and the GS, they are not easy to screw in, but the main issue that catches most out is the angle, it has to be screwed in exactly forward in a straight line and when you look at the socket it appears that it should be put in on a slight angle, this is wrong..!! The threads appear to be offset from the face of the thread socket and it has to go in facing straight ahead, or it will jam and appear as though the threads are bu99ered..!!
