If the 4200 is an average drive, where does that leave the Vantage then? I certainly wouldn't swap mine for one. BTW, I'll be keeping mine for longer than 1-3 years as well.

No idea about the Vantage but people are looking for choices.

With the 4200 it depends on how you use it. If it is a weekend car then fine, keep it a long time. If it's a daily driver then there comes a point where you need to move on.

The GTS works well for me because a) it's got room for four adults and a boot big enough to fit a fortnight's worth of luggage and shite, b) I love the look and the noise of it, c) size isn't really an issue because I have no need to drive in London / any other big town. It is a nuisance in car parks and I'm paranoid of door dings so always seek out the most distant parking slot against a wall. It cost (and continues to cost) a load more than I'd budgeted for but for now it's worth it. If i was after a London car a Fiat 500 Twinair would be the first test-drive.

I'm in exactly the same situation as you.

Seems to the position we all find ourselves in , those that as Bigbob says use it as a third/weekend car , havent yet experienced owning an Aston , but have friends who have and do , and other that the front part of the cockpit being an extremely nice place to be nothing really appeals to me more than owning a masser , ownership Kudos is very similar but reliability really is an issue from what my mate says , he's always got niggles or problems (perhaps because its not his daily driver )

If a nice GTS became available for the right price it certainly would do the job for me , whether it fills the gap that would be left by losing the GS or 4200 remains to be seen , to be honest i feel really jittery taking the plunge just in case im not happy and end up being back at square one , no one told me 6 years ago that maserati ownership is like playing an expensive game of snakes and ladders lol

Two of my neighbours lusted after Vantages, bought one each and both sold them on within 5 months. Both said they were fantastic to look at and own but cr4p to drive. Of all the cars my son Ryan has been in, the Vantage is among the very worst he has experienced or driven. Personally, I would much rather have my spyder or a GS than a Vantage as I've never had a Vantage leave me either in a straight line or around the lanes.

Always interested to hear of others' experiences. Did they say why so cr4p to drive? I had a really long test drive on various roads and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I was with Aston's instructor (rather than a salesman) who really helped me to get the most out of the car and encouraged me to push on. Admittedly it's nothing like owning one for any period of time. I have mates who've owned DB9s and had plenty of issues and I much prefer the look and compactness of the Vantage anyway. I'm not hugely surprised a Vantage wouldn't leave you behind - your Spyder has slightly more power and torque than the 4.3 and slightly less than the later 4.7. Top speeds and 0-60 are almost identical as well. My dilemma isn't about the 4200 though, but the later GTS. My thoughts still return to a GS occasionally, but they feel quite old to me now as the overall design hasn't changed much from the 3200.

You know me Frank always try to give a subjective view LOL, and yes im very proud of the fact that 6 years of ownership still sees me a few grand ahead and on the plus side of things, so been a virtually free hobby , bigger moves = bigger risks bigger costs

Re that Auction no movement for the last 2 days but still a week to go , ive virtually discounted it unless it bursts into a last minute cacophany and i get it for a song :)

End up being a nice xmas present

OK, I'm going to say it. I've been meaning to for a long time now. Here goes.

I think that the flared side sills on the GS look really silly and they totally put me off buying one. There, I've said it.

I really am not sure if I could live with them. The aesthetics are an important part of the overall pleasure of car ownership for me. I do not know whether seeing flared sills every time I looked at the car would grate. Ultimately, I believe that they would.

Contentious!

I wonder if you could find some regular 4200 skirts and retro fit them? I believe the fixings are the same, so can't se why not.

I know! I typed that post with some trepidation. :D

I didn't know that the sills were interchangeable. That is a potential game changer.

A couple of members have retro-fitted GS side skirts to 4200s and even 3200s, so I can't see how it couldn't go the other way. 4200 skirts would also be easier to acquire and significantly cheaper.

Thinking about this some more - the facelift 4200 has the GS front and back bumpers along with the 4200 skirts - take a look at one of them to see if you like the look - job done!
