GT Thang / converting the masses

Escape the Smoke for a few days and head for friends in Yorkshire, with son tucked up in the back. Four hours of peace and comfort, just me, the kid, some minor squeaks and a gently thrumming V8. Lovely. And, because I'm not driving with the needle stuck at '7' am delighted to get 20mpg. Bargain!

A few days later, the sun's out and its time for an evening run into the moors. GS does its sports car thing. My pal has cycled every road in the county and finds us brilliant routes. We get every combination of road and corner in just one four mile stretch. Good grief, I wish there were paths like this down south. Half a tank drunk in an hour. (And thank you to the chap who let us know about the mobile revenue camera. Narrowly avoided a News at 10 'and finally' moment...).

Let my friend drive and he's dazzled and thrilled. Its become a bit of a habit now - letting mates experience the GS for themselves. Doesn't always work: one got scared and unhappy. One didn't quite make it because he was too busy being sick at the side of the road after I took him out for a warm up (er, sorry about that L) but the rest are converts. No-one wonders 'why'. They all get it. Folk with next to no interest in cars come away babbling about about power bands and turn in. As much as I love my solo dawn raids, its such a pleasure seeing other people get a kick out of the car and the sensations it serves up.

Burbling along afterwards, I wondered (once again) what else I could get for the money - or even twice as much - that would cover this range of bases as well. I couldn't think of anything. Its sat outside now, mud splattered, brake-dusted, stone-chipped and rained on. Think I'll go look at it for a while...

Nice post Marwood and congrats for stumbling upon the best kept secret in motoring! These are fabulous cars and although I regularly go out in the company of much more expensive exotica, it is fair to say my old 8 banger has forged a reputation far and above it's monetary value. People are genuinely amazed when they find out how much I paid for it and what it can do. I love mine to bits and will never sell it.

I know! People don't believe my company van cost more than my Masa, all that passion for so little money compared to as Benny's says all the other rich boys toys, best car I've ever owned :)).

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure my mpg would be much better if I didn't live on the doorstep of the Dales and spend so much time scaring sheep (and b***y cyclists - the Tour de France has a lot to answer for round here).

I know quite a few routes around Ilkley but if you've any to share I'd like to try some new ones.
