Handbrake button

We have all read about terrible experiences with the 4200 handbrakes. Delaminated shoes, weak cables...

Mine has been absolutely fine for 4 years until yesterday at the MOT (passed with no problems of course!) when the car was returned to me with the handbrake button completely depressed.

I immediately imagined a cable or spring damage. I spent my afternoon taking apart the centre console to reach the handbrake mechanism. Not a difficult job but time consuming. I managed to make it work again perfectly with a bit of WD40.

Sorry I did not take pictures but if this happens to you just remove the handbrake leather handle. It is fixed with a small alley key at the lower bottom of the handle, it just slip out. After removing the part you can easily spray some oil on the button and let it get inside the mechanism. Since I had full access to mine I also sprayed oil from the back of the lever but it might not have been necessary.

This is an easy fix for what might be a recurrent problem (my car had signs that someone tried to pull the handbrake button out before, signs removed with a bit of sending paper!). I am sure Maserati would have charged me loads!

Ok I can shed light on this: the handbrake lever is designed for a left hand drive car and pulling it from the right side 'opens' the mechanism and allows it to spring past the ratchet in the final death throws, more commonly it wears the outside of the teeth. I took mine apart last year and 'closed' it up to get me past the Modena trip.

I have since bought a new lever to put on - cunningly I bought from Germany so it is off a left hand drive car so will not have been bent! Negotiated it down to £35 I think.
