Headlight operation 4200

Stupid question.

I've only driven my car once at night and the headlights seemed to operate just fine.

I've just been cleaning the stickiness off the light switch and thought I'd check the lights.

Side lights come on, dash illuminates, but the headlights do not come on. Tried full beam and flashing the lights, still no response. Fog lights front and back work fine.

No bulb failure light.

What am I missing here?

Does one fuse control both lights?

Cheers

I'm assuming the light switch is functioning correctly as it works to select side lights and the fog lights can be selected in dipped beam position (I think that's correct) so it's sensing that they're selected.

The bulbs haven't failed as the car would indicate that and the chances of 2 head light units failing at the same time must be extremely slim.

So it has to be a relay or fuse issue I guess.

Quick update. So fog lights can be selected on With only side lights turned on, so the switch might be faulty.

But this scenario doesn't explain why I can't even flash the lights with them selected off anyway.

I've noticed I can not manually turn on any of the interior lights from inside, apart from the passenger side rear light, except when I had the passenger door open, then I could manually turn on and off the drivers side rear passenger light. All interior lights turn on when I unlock the car....

Other electrics appear to work fine, apart from maybe drivers heated seat.

I've checked the boot and fuel door release.

Weird

Have you tried the wipers, radio and heater?

Random weird electrical faults are often low battery voltage or different dodgy earth.

My other thinking is ignition switch or auxiliary power relay (if the wipers work it’s not the relay)

Just went outside again and fired her up.

All electrics operational, windscreen wipers, heater, radio, cruise, everything bar....

1. Drivers heated seat (switch works as I can hear the relay clicking)

2. The headlights

3. Interior lights as described above except the rear light (drivers side) can be switched on with either door open.

4. Glove box light, but that could be the bulb.

The battery did fail its test during the service, but as I'd not noticed any issues, I elected to leave it and see. I've done a full recondition of it prior to it's service. It could be the battery, but with the engine running and alternator working surely the lights should come on?

Have you got a multimeter so you can properly fault find?
Not to hand, my dad's got one, he's just round the corner so no problem there.

Prior to disconnecting the battery to install the cruise stalk I took a photo to make sure I didn't mess up reconnecting it (missing battery hook ups etc) I'll double check that, but I'd expect to see more failures if I had.

The drivers heated seat issue I don't believe to be linked with this. It wasn't working before.

Thanks for your help.

It seems logical you have done something when you did the cruise.
It would, but I'm fairly sure the interior lighting issue might be pre-existing aswell.

The headlining was changed out by the previous owner, maybe they missed something when installing it?

I'm charging the battery now.

I checked the terminals were secured nicely when I reconnected it.

Checked the light relays in the footwell and fuses 14 15 16 17 28 and 29(I believe) and all appear OK.

I'm going to swap out the battery given shiltech said it failed their test.

Don't know whether all my electrical niggles are linked or not.

Obviously I installed the part off the alfa 166 to give me cruise control. All functions (cruise, indicators, wipers, windscreen wash) work bar the high beam (fixed or flash) but could that install be the root cause? I'd have thought the stalk would have zero impact on whether I can turn on my dipped beams or not?

Giving me a headache.

You could have disturbed a connector or something. Pull the column shroud and have a look

I will do, I know I originally checked all the connectors and seated them properly but who knows.

Here's hoping they're easily accessible with the wheel in place.

Took the column shroud off, disconnected all 4 connection blocks, sprayed with contact cleaner and reseated them, making sure all 4 firmly clicked in. No difference, same situation.
