If you liked the SMG in your M3 you will like the MC shift...It's a better box where as the CC wasn't as good as the SMG...I had an M3 CSL and found that box quicker than a CC....but the MC shift moved one from the CC...

Thought OP said DCT rather than SMG, very different gearboxes.

Correct, I had the E92 M3 with the superb DCT 'box in it. Drove an M5 with SMGII which is more akin to the older CC 'box.

Roger, if you're an hour from Bowker you could be very close to me, or 2 hours away! If you're close to me, you're welcome to try what we've got. I currently have auto 4.2 & 4.7, as well as an MC Shift coming later this week.

I'm closer to you in fact. I'm near Stockport. I've got a client in Chester who I do need to see soon so perhaps pull that forwards at bit. Could you send me a PM with a preview of new car you're expecting (or post some details here)? Cheers.

...digging yet further into people's opinions...

...has anyone gone for one box but wished, after a period of time, they'd gone for the other?

I'm interested to know the grumbles people have with their chosen box (even if they generally love it).

I'm aware that on a test drive it's difficult to perfectly judge the 'liveability' of a box so wondering what I should be keenly looking out for. Obviously a jerky MC at low speeds. Potential detachment with the auto (try in manual mode), etc...

I remember test driving the 4200 and couldn't see the wood for the trees due to the excitement of it all!! Admittedly I'm a chunk older now (not so sure about the wiseness issue though ;) )

Not me, I am very happy with my choice. I find that the auto mode is fine when you don't wish to use the paddles and any jerkiness when cold is no worse than any other box I have had, plus it warms up in 15 minutes so no real issue.
I think that most people are put off the MCS due to the cost of the clutch replacement but they can last up to 50k miles and after all, you only live once!

Yes !.... I should have gone for an MC shift.... used to love the CC box on my 4200..... The logic with the Auto was that..
a. - Wife could drive it...
b. I'm too old and lazy and I wouldn't get much out of the MC shift...

In reality..
Wife has yet to drive it..
I have it in Sport Manual ... pretty much all of the time.... and whilst the changes are good enough I miss the brutal kick you need on a nice day in the dry...

Interesting to hear that you don't find it 'too' jerky. Something I'll be closely scrutinising!

Yeah, auto for consideration of the wife, and that has crossed my mind. My wife will use mine, maybe not loads, but with 2 kids & a dog, sometimes it's easier for me to use her Touareg and she pootles about in mine (using up my fuel!!). Also, interesting to hear you actually miss the 'brutal kick' on the MCS. As has been said, both 'boxes come with compromise.

We like 'happy bunnies' :)

I just let the wife drive mine in auto mode. She hasn't progressed on to full manual yet, but she wants to.

Sure the auto is slow and the pauses in between shifts would allow an elephant to pass, but for her use it is fine.

The only thing I get worried about is the clunk sound when it does change gear it sounds aggressive and if you aren't pushing it can sound a little disconcerting. But would I swap it for an auto? No way. I love the rawness and you can make it as brutal or as smooth as you want with practice.

Thanks. Nice honest insight into both worlds of MCS.
