High mileage Gransport - What are the reasons not to buy?

High mileage will put a lot of people off.

That and the grey interior which wouldn't be a popular feature.

Lovely looking car exterior-wise though.

Both my cars are high mileage and I would take my 4200 anywhere she is now on 107,000 I don't want to sell her so I don't worry she is a 4.2 V8 I'm going to keep her going and with such good service from DL at Swindon I have no worries. The 360 is now on 65,000 and a lot of people wouldn't touch her but with nearly 30,000 service history and more importantly in my price range again I have no worries. Bite the bullet and if its your dream do it in my opinion. Phil.

It's like a milestone thing with mileage, 50K, 60K, 75K etc. When I sold my Jag XJR she had 168K and drove fantastically well, most miles done on motorways. A good V8 engine should be fine for 150K without issue, so long as the servicing is done on time and top quality oil used, my Jag always had top racing oil and the engine was as sweet as 100K ago, care counts..!!

Hi Phil, I thought you were in the motor trade - just wondering why you give the car to DL for servicing and not do it in-house?

I meant good service from the Parts Guys posting out what i need usually next day.
My 4200 has in my custodianship only been touched by myself.
My 360 will be going up to The Super Car Showrooms in Worcs for its annual just in case i want to sell as unfortunately to keep her value she will need main dealer / specialist history and as over the last couple of years through my introduction to them via Andrea of Service the Car we have become friends so they are the people for me anything else outside of the annual i will be doing.
Phil.

Spot on Robert Care Counts and in my opinion the oil and filter the most important items.
Worst thing to happen today is manufactures introducing Long Life Service.
Just not what the internal combustion engine needs.
We wouldn't go for a month without cleaning our teeth would we.

Phil, how often do you change the oil in your cars then?

I thought as much on the service front that you'd be taking care of the Masser.

My 4200 I do every 6 months have done since i got her.
Buy the filter genuine even though its Purflux made in France you can only get through Maserati and the Shell Helix through my local factor.
Its never dirty and the most miles i have done between changes is 6,000.

Phil,
I agree with that, oil stood in an engine can only deteriate over time, so I tend to look at 6 months even though I may not have used it over winter for example, the oil get's a change in Spring. If you know you have good quality fresh oil in there, you know you are doing the right thing. Old filters are the same, old sludge and contaminants in the filter when not in regular use, will tend to set pretty hard, so then the filter does not work hardly at all, not good for any engine.
Cheers

The car is owned by a member on here...He doesn't come that often but he bought it around 1 or 2 years or so ago and it had high miles then. I remember when he bought it he was worried about the miles but it seemed to be a good one......

I for one really like the grey interior. Had it in the Alfa 156 SportsWagon, it was know as Elephant Skin.

The issues with the high mileage is nobody really knows. Some have failed prematurely from Oil pump failure but it appears to be older cars hitting 70k miles plus, not all, but some.

Phil is testament to the engine, he piles on the mileage and does not worry about it and the cars seem to like to be driven. The oil pump failures are starting to emerge as cars that are left outsitde and not used much, rust appears in the pump, then it shears.

I was having this discussion about the oil pump with Mike Roberts on Tuesday saying I feel any owner in for the long haul should change the pump as a service item around the 60-70k mark.

The pump is about a grand but the labour to fit is quite pricey as its an engine out job or as Mike recons, you should do it when you have the clutch changes as you might be able to get to it from behind.

Either way, we pay £1500-£2k for a clutch and my personal feeling is that £1500 on an new pump as a preventative measure is money well spent.

And Dem as its been for sale for an age it could be a cheaper car........It wouldn't bother me if the histor and condition was on the button......You will also see the car for sale on PH with a dealer for £1000 more...Its the same car...

Probably be my route into a Gransport, unless GTs come into my price bracket.

That said, I still really want a F355 or a 308!

If I was looking for a GS as a keeper and the documentation and an indie report matched the write-up then this could go another 50k and cost as much in servicing as a 40k car getting to 90. In that case it's worth a cheeky offer if nothing else.
