High/wavering idle - 3200gt

Will do Bill; dont think it was aircon related as i very rarely use it - definitely not in the past couple of mornings when the issues have occurred! Know what you mean about the revs wavering when the pump kicks in though - definitely something I've noticed when using it in my auto.

Yes, flybywire, a great invention, NO!!! Alfa's are always going wrong, and the Bosch Switch, that sits on the base of the pedal, is £320 new!
But i suspect, its dirt lodged around the TB. A good clean with brake cleaner inside, plus all pipes cleaned, air holes cleaned, and very important, main breather pipes, to Engine/ Airbox etc, cleaned.
I have seen main breather pipes on Italian cars, harden up, then collapse, and this can affect, idle, and oil pressure!!
Last, it could be a dirty MAF Sensor. This can cause idle issues.

Andy.

Cheers Andy - in a bizarre way (all be it I expect only temporary..) the car seems to have righted itself! Unsure if it took a while to re-learn its throttle position parameters after doing the suggested resets noted earlier in this thread, or whether it was just 'having a sulk' on Sunday/Monday! Either way - hopefully it'll give me a week or 2 of problem free driving, after which my diary will allow me to pop over to Autoshield for Marios & co to give it the once over. Comments reference giving the TB and surrounding components a good clean duly noted. Cheers, Ben

Hi,

Had the same problem until yesterday, a 'Smoke Test', was done, which showed a vacuum leak in the air intake. A new hose clip sorted it!

Interestingly Ben after I replaced the starter motor on my Ghibli (which involves removing the entire injection system and manifold), when I restarted the car it was ticking over really high and then started hunting up and down for no apparent reason. After a few minutes tickover went back to normal and it's never done it again! I'll watch out for your car as I live on York Road near Wetherby.

Defintely Arfa, I too, will keep my eyes peeled for you!! :)

Sadly my relief at the car issue having 'settled' was misplaced.....

It's been idling level since yesterday, all be it a little lower than normal! It appears to sit about 1000-1050rpm now, as opposed to 1100ish rpm before these recent issues started to occur. Tonight, after leaving the office, I made it all of about 500 yards before I was greeted with a significant change in the engine note; something mustve popped off/broken/disconnected (you may now note, Im not very technically gifted, although I do have plenty of interest and enthusiasm...) and now the car sounds like one of those kiddy Corsa's with the massive exhausts. Very loud, sounds awful - no CEL's but I'm guessing exhaust related. Either that, or an air pipe or something has popped off?

Any ideas/opinions - please feel free to share!! Borderline hitting the bottle tonight....

To update.... Marios @ Autoshield is picking her up tomorrow - he too, is of the opinion that it's either TB related, or the plenum chamber O-ring and a loosening of the securing bolts as a few of you have suggested. I will note back when I have further news! Cheers, Ben

Absolutely!! I think if you cut Marios with a knife (and please dont!) he would bleed Selenia 10/60 - definitely knows his stuff!! :) Roll on the healthy return of the motor!

im having issues with my idle now, they will hunt between 1500-1800, throttle re-set cures it for a while (5 mins- a week) vary's i last done it a week ago then today started again, its had a BBA-reman throttle body already fitted, thats all i know, no idea about warning lights because they dont work after the previous owner/s messed with them.

Well it's one of 3 things.

1. The throttle body is failing
2. The pedal pot is failing
3. Air leak, usually on the underside of the plenum, the plate has come loose.

Don't think it's 3 so logically check 2 first then 1.

If you take the pedal pot apart you will see a round contact disc, these tend to flake and corrode. Alfa GTVV6 are similar I am led to beleive.

Good luck let us know how you get on.

I would agree. You might want to check the throttlebody. With ignition off remove the big hose going into it and check with your fingers if the butterfly moves freely from the fully close and fully open position to the partially open position. If it doesn't DON'T force! Good luck!

I agree with Conaero too. If the throttle reset cures it for a while it sounds like the rotor could be loose in the pedal pot or there's some resistor material floating about in there - if it is that, do a google search on 3200gt pedal pot, there are a number of guides from boomerang in the NL on how to clean it up (as long as it hasn't gone too far). I didn't wan't to give you links.... you either need to speak Dutch or there's a hint of the dark side about some of the others!

Steve

iv had to do throttle re-set about 5 times, so yesterday i removed and cleaned the potentiometer, used some contact protective grease in there, so will see how it goes! its really easy to remove the pot, thought it was going to be tricky, but was only 3 allen key bolts :)

is there anyone on here in essex area who can do the sd2 diagnostics?
