How heavy is your right foot?

Know what you mean TT, driving the diesel I seemed to spend a lot of time concentrating on economy and thinking ahead. "can I overtake without getting in the way of the car behind coming up", "can I overtake before the upcoming corner" etc. With the maser i'm essentially relearning how to drive. Moving from fwd to rwd, the power hike, the acceleration. It's all new and I love it.

Hmmmm....

In the Diesel I just expect the economy. It happens, day in day out - why worry about it?

In the Maser I expect the whole theatrical effect of the Maserati experience. I'm only interested in the fuel consumption in so far as I don't want to push it if I run out. :D

Nice car, btw :)

I don't worry too much about economy. I admit I'm surprised how far the 3200 can get on a tank of fuel when in LHD mode. Normality is resumed when back in RHD.

My old Alfa 159 soot chucker could achieve sub 10mpg when driving "very" hard. The Giulietta is proving to be a slight improvement and I've discovered a new challenge with that...In "emergency braking situations" the hazzard lights flash automatically to indicate rapid deceleration. A quick run down some local roads recently had the hazzards on at pretty much every braking point and I'd like to think I'm a progressive braker rather than just a "bang 'em on hard" driver :proud:

My 159 ti diesel has the hazards flashing under heavy braking. Shat the life out of me when I first found out! How on earth did you get sub 10mpg in a diesel? Even at 135mph+ (on a private road, of course) I get about 17mpg.

I got the GS below 7 at Brunty this year, typically get 12-15mpg.

Ta drew. Looks like we have similar models, lovely. As for the Alfa, must admit, that would annoy me. I had a pug 309 gti a long time ago which would turn on the low fuel light when I braked hard so I put tape over the bulb. Love the french

I did a 'Dads day out' charity day at Dunsfold park 2 years ago and when I worked it out, I did 8.2 overall but when my commuting mileage to the hotel was taken out, I averaged 5.1 on track. I didn't know a 4.2 could use so much fuel. It was great fun though! On the road I work on a touring average of 15mpg but if playing out with like minded idiots, I get under 10. Bollox to economy, life is too short.

The 159 was a 1.9 chipped up to 200bhp being driven very ******* twisty roads in low gears. Normal mpg was mid 30s and quick road driving around 20. It didn't have the flashing hazzards that I ever noticed, but it was an early one (Nov 2006 build) so that may have been an upgrade on later models. I must admit, first time the hazzards flashed in the Giulietta made me jump and had me going for the switch, then it got kind of addictive. I do still miss the 159 and regret not hunting down one of the last TI models. Some of that may have been familiarity though, as we had it for just over seven years. The Giulietta (170 Veloce) is ok and wifey quite likes it although she says it feels flat in "N" compared to the 159. I'm inclined to agree, but it's much better in "D" and the handling sharpens up too with the Q2 diff.

Mine's a 2010, the latest 2.4 I could find. I think it's a cracking car for the money. I had the Auto Lusso poly bush upgrade fitted on the front suspension a couple of months ago. The handling is transformed and for a big heavy fwd car it's quite chuckable. Turn-in is significantly improved and the ride is no harder. I'm deliberating over a remap which would give it about 275bhp and something like 500nm torques. Would make it more interesting and fun to drive, but would defeat the point of the 'economical' daily.

I had 32 showing after a run down the M1 through all the road works. I was so surprised I nearly crashed. Well down in the teens is more usual.

I test drove the 2.4 when we went to look at the 159 before placing the order. Loved the car and the power delivery, but first gear seemed pretty pointless as it was so torquey. It felt like it needed a taller first gear as it ran out of steam too quickly. I had a D5 Volvo S60 that felt the same. The 1.9 wasn't quite as noticeable, but it had a lot less torque. 159's are very sensitive to wheel alignment, so I reckon the bush upgrade will help keep everything nice and taught. Great cars for the money. Should have kept mine really, but it was getting a bit leggy with 120k on the clock and starting to feel old.

Managed 5mpg in the M5 when I first got it but they said that it will only show 7 on the DIS. If you buy any performance car and complain about the fuel consumption then it isn't meant for you.

In nearly four years of commuting at roughly 100 mph (outside rush hours) in the 4200 CC my average consumption has been around 19 mpg. I've now been driving the GTS for 10 days at similar speeds and still get 19 mpg (despite the additional 200 kg and 50 hp).

It obviously depends on the car. My Cit C6 would dip into the low 20s when I drove it like I normally would like. Once I started seeing those figures I thought 'what's the point of diesel, I could get those figures from my 3.0 166'. On the other hand it could be coaxed into giving 40 mpg. So every journey became an obsession with the trip computer.

The AC is reasonably economical for us, use an ML55 AMG for winter, and hack duties, often sees single figures, normals 14mpg, and never had more than 20 on a run! We don't buy them for economy.
