I lost my belt!

At the weekend, I was out on wedding duty and being pestered by a gaggle of BMW's, in particular a viciously fast M3.

In an attempt to show them a clean pair of heels, I dropped a few gears and unleashed the hounds. When I did this, the dashboard lit up and the steering became very heavy. Luckily, we had just arrived at our destination, so my dignity was kept intact and I hobbled around to the back of the hotel. Upon inspection, it transpired that the serptine belt had come off the pulleys but was still intact. I was a long way from home and it was a Saturday evening, so I was very much on my own.

I found the tension pulley and the route the belt takes on its travel around the engine. Luckily, there is no belly pan under this part of the engine bay, so a roadside fix was possible. I parked the nearside wheels up on a hight kerb, giving me room to get underneath. The Tensioner Pulley has a 15 nut on its head, and there is enough room to get you hand and spanner up to it.
A bit of a struggle later, the belt was back on.

It is possible that the Tensioner Pulley has lost some of its spring, so it's on the 'To Do', list!

Well done on your DIY repair, hardly the best time for it to happen. The car looks great in the photo too

Actually this story is a warning to replace the serpentine belt regularly. A week before the belt came off, I was having issues with low charging voltage and occasional 'kicks' in the steering wheel. Since the new belt was fitted, the alternator is now charging at 14.2 volts and the steering is fine.
