hi guys, sorry have not been around lately my laptop packed up only just got new one, well this morning i went to start up my 3200 after a week of sitting in the garage and after a normal start up after 20 or so secs it revved upto 4k, i turned it off started it again and same thing revs high, and with the engine being cold i got scared to leave it so turned it off, what can i do?

Dem from the little i know about 3200's this does sound rather typical throttlebody problems , i suggest doing a throttle reset procedure ( doesn't require engine start) and then try starting it , after that is may be the case that because its sat idle for a week that the butterfly valve is sticking slightly , may be a case of just removing the throttlebody and spraying the butterfly valve to free it off. Let us know how you get on

With use and due to its design, the "fly-by-wire" throttle system gradually narrows its operating band between idle and full throttle. If left unchecked, this can result in an increasingly sensitive throttle pedal affecting drivability. As it's not exactly insensitive to start with, the result is a PITA with hill starts etc

Whilst you would normally use either an SD2 or SD3 to reset the engine ECU, the factory manuals (Engine volume: page 96 of the Fuel supply section) do contain another approach from the comfort of the drivers seat but do read very carefully.

If you are not sure of what you are doing, leave it to someone who does!

1) Reset the mechanical zero position

* Put gear lever in neutral
* Switch on ignition (to MAR position) but do NOT start the engine
* Do not touch the throttle pedal for 2 minutes
* Switch off ignition

2) Reset the mechanical Full Throttle position

* Put gear lever in neutral
* Switch on ignition (to MAR position) but do NOT start the engine
* Fully depress throttle pedal and hold for 5 seconds
* Release throttle pedal completely
* Switch off ignition

The full text does not specify waiting until the various warning lights have extinguished themselves after switching on ignition, but I do not depress throttle (item 2) or start timing until they have.

By way of explanation, the no throttle setting (tickover or lower value) is 350/650mv whilst full throttle (upper value) is typically 3,100/3,300mv.

Apparently, the management system strategy gradually reduces the full throttle value by 5mv (for the next switch-on) every time the ignition is turned on (whether engine started or not) UNLESS full throttle is applied for 5 seconds at least once in that cycle (eg climbing a steep hill with full throttle etc). Therefore, under certain circumstances, the full throttle setting will gradually reduce, leading to over sensitivity at the pedal. The manual reset procedure restores the upper and lower values to their default design settings.

hope this helps

Dem, if the above does not fix it and it proves not to be throttle body related, I think I know what it might be as I has the very same thing happen to mine.

On the underside of the inlet plenum, there is a cover plate, with 8 or so screws holding it on. What happens is they shook loose on mine, dropped into the V of the block and there is a rubber gasket to make it air tight, and this had got sucked in partially. If you can hear a new sucking/wooshing noise coming from the engine, then thats your problem....or similar air leak.

If you have no joy with Loz's suggestion above and you cant hear a sucking noise, remove the 2 into 1 pipe that attaches to the throttle body and visually inspect it as someone starts it to see if the butterfly valve is stuck. Be very delicate with it.

Hope this helps.

just as a point of interest and unfortunately not very constructive but the throttle reset will only cure sensitive throttle. also there is no way of freeing a stiff butterfly movement by spraying oil into it. even with the tb on a bench the only way you could lubricate the pivot points (bearings) is by opening up both sides. this entails breaking apart soldered joints and dealing with a couple of stiff contact wires which are near impossible.

sounds more like you have an air leak . if tb is suspected and subsequently diagnosed i'm sure your tech will remove it ( six bolts and a few minutes)

Dem if the car was just serviced by HR Owen then pop in and see Tony and get him to rectify it........their responsibility if they have just serviced the car.

Dem, best to have a little poke around yourself first, If you remove the TB inlet hose, you will be able to see if its shot or not. If its shot, contact David Askew, its bolt on bolt off...easy!

...Oh, Dem, if you do do it yourself, can you do a little guide with pics in the Running Reports & Technical Fixes section?
