Hello Aussies

I understand that many of you have imported cars from the UK, Gransports in particular.

I'd like to know how it's done, what's involved, how long does it take, what are the costs etc.

Appreciate your help

Cost wise, as a rule of thumb.

GBD cost of vehicle / xchange rate.

Allow 30% for freight,duty etc
Allow approx $10k aud for local compliance, maybe a bit cheaper now.

When you compare prices, at best a marginal exercise at todays xchange rates when stacked up against prices of the locally delivered cars .

Doesn't really work at the moment for two reasons. The first is that the AUD has lost about 20% against Sterling in the last two years. Second is that so many cars were imported availability went up and so prices down. Three years ago importing saved you about 20,000 AUD and today it would save you pretty much nothing. When I imported mine I could fly to the UK look at cars , buy, import and still be 13/15,000 in front. However if you are looking to move here then bringing your car with you makes sense as a whole different set of rules apply ( favourably)

Agree with Geoffs comments.A number of these imported cars that are in excellent condition are for sale at very reasonable prices. IMO it would be marginal at best.

Hi Matt, good to here from you. The car is going great. Touch wood!No trouble at all other than cracked rims I mentioned on forum. I had the car serviced recently ,all good. Clutch wear 16% which I am happy about . I use the driving techniques from the Forum mainly dropping in neutral at traffic lights.
I had the front resprayed for stone chips a couple of months ago by a friend who is Italian descendent and he did a fantastic job. Just loved working on a Italian car.
I have done about 10k since getting car. Went to Auto Italia in Canberra with about 30 Maseratis in attendance. Waiting for some photos and will upload.
I love your Forum it has so much info, and recommend to any Maserati owner I meet.
Love to meet one day,may be next year.If you ever come to Aus. you are welcome to drive the old girl again.
Regards
Robert

I used to do this but then i read somewhere or was told ( cant really remember) to just leave in gear because it is "one less gear change every time you do it".
Can the gurus please confirm which is the best option?

I think that given there's a total lack of empirical controlled data, it's probably not worth worrying about ;)

If you're going from 3rd (say) to a know stop, then sure, pop into neutral. That saves 2 shifts and *may JUST* over the course of the clutch's life time give you a few more miles. Or not. Given I really doubt there's as much wear from a life time of skipping 2 gentle down shifts as there is from ripping away from the start lane a Brunty once ;)

Only ever drop mine in to neutral if I'm stood in traffic, otherwise she is in gear and ready to go, that's how they were made, the clutch does not ride when stood..!!

Indeed. I tend to drop into neutral when I'm getting to the lights as I get very annoyed with people that don't use their handbrake ;)

*And* that way I *rarely* forget to put it in gear before I try to move, which, in turn, means I rarely get caught out when it's been and dropped itself into neutral :)
