In-car cam shaft removal and timing

Hello All,

I'm in a bit of a pickle regarding valves:
Doing the service on the engine which includes checking the valve clearances. Did one bank and the exhausts are fine. However 4 of the 8 intake valves are out tolerance between 0.25 and 0.28 and the fifth is scraping the 0.25.

According to the manual when more valves are out of tolerance it's easier to pull the camshaft and replace the tappets than using the special tool in-situ, which b.t.w I would need to get from Hill engineering (this car is expanding my tool kit with all sorts of "out there" tools ). Side note it does say pulling cam shaft with engine on the bench....

Question 1 is therefore has anybody pulled the camshaft with the engine still in the car? It does like tight on the flywheel end so I am not certain if undone where it would be running into issues when placing the whole lot back.

When it where possible to pull cams with engine in-car, that would be a nice oppertunity to figure out the exhaust cam shaft retard. Measuring it does not seem complicated and might do that anyway although I'd have to get my local machine shop to make me a special tool (again).

Therefore 2nd question is: Versus what would the cam shaft be retarded? Are the tolerances in the manual correct and thus a matter of setting the cams correctly, or are the values in the manuals off and by what amount?

Thanks for all you great insights, while I endeavour to get the beast shipshape again.
