What is wrong with insuring the car yourself and then having your son as a named driver? That is how my parents did it when I was 18 and it didn't cost much.

Sure you don't build up no claims. But to be honest by the time I got my first car I was a lot older and no claims didn't really have much of an impact on the yearly premiums.

they got wise to that, costs more than there own policy

Because it this is an additional vehicle without any bonus the premium will be based on the youngest driver and you are no better off.
Most insurers will now automatically put the premium up dramatically as soon as there is a young driver on the scene irrespective of number of vehicles in the family or what frequency you say they will drive.
Things have changed a lot in last few years in this respect.

Thats known as fronting the insurance. Its a big no no these days. If the insurance company believe that the younger driver drives the car more often than the older driver then they wriggle out of paying any claims.

The insurance price for this if the older driver has a car is also much the same as the young persons quote. The other problem you have is they ask who owns the car. If the log book isnt in your name then your not going to get insurance easily as the main policy holder.

Indeed - I was quoted £5K to insure my son as a named driver on my Audi when he passed a couple of months ago. It was £2500 on his mother's sh!t box 10 year old Punto. It's cheaper to buy a car for him and insure it than have him as a named driver.
