I would work out if the CEL light is working as described first. I have had trouble with ELM readers on my 2001 car, and some work some don't. Getting the reader to work will make your life a lot easier, worth a bit of effort. I will get some details of the reader i use its a cheap one but supports KWP2000 protocol which my car responds to.
