Is there a cheap space save to fit a GTS

When we were at Uni there was a guy sponsored by Lotus on the engineering course. In his 3rd year he often had Lotus cars to run round in which he used to great effect when pulling the girls. One night he left the club with a rather nice blonde in tow and shot off in his latest Esprit. £0 min later 5 up in my Mk 1 Escort we saw him at the side of the road trying to convince said blonde that the now flat rear wheel had to go on her lap.

Now we could have offered to throw the wheel in the boot of the MK1 but thought nah let him work this one out for himself - he did get home but he didn't get a sh4g that night

I can't believe I never gave a thought as to where I would put the full size wheel, though I guess it could go in the back seat.
In the end I have gone for a plug kit and some water based repairer that will not damage the tyre / prevent a proper repair - and of course I have full European RAC cover.

Thanks for the input.....

I think it is the foreign trips that brings the question to a head. If I'm driving to the local retail park and I get a puncture it's no big deal - it'll ruin my afternoon, but that's all. It's another matter if you have a twelve hour drive ahead of you for a pre-paid peak holiday season tunnel crossing and you get a flat on a French motorway. Your breakdown cover might only get your pulled off the motorway, now you are at the mercy of the local tyre shop having the right brand and size of tyre - probably on a weekend. Without the right insurance you are looking at some costly hotel bills, rebooking your crossing, and paying through the nose to get what will probably amount to two new tyres to match them across the axle. It's easy to see that topping a £1,000. Even with the best breakdown cover you will be looking at completing your journey in the crew cab of a flatbed; or trying to find flights and trusting your pride and joy to a series of sub-contracted recovery companies. Neither are appealing.

It's a long long time since I've had a flat on a French Autoroute while dashing for a ferry - but it has happened and luckily my Alfa had a full-sized spare. We were on our way in ten minutes.

The very reason why I sorted a spare for mine.
Plus I do have a plug kit (from my Elise days), and a can of foam too!
Not to mention a pair of jump leads, spare fuses, F1 relay, small pack of tools with bits and bobs....and of course a RAC card as well!

Well it could be your lucky day boys.

I bought an unused what I thought was a GranSport Collapsable space saver complete with tool kit but upon offering it up it appears it is a QP/GT/GTS spacesaver as the pcd is bigger. There is a tear in the bag the has been repaired but it's as new and complete.

PM me if your interested.

Ah after discussions with Stuart Lincs it appears this wheel will not clear the larger calipers on the GTS so it's for the 4.2 QP and GT. I will try it on a GTS just to check.

Part number is: 181773
185/60 r17 93p 5x114.3

Matt, let me know what you are wanting for it, if it doesn't work for Sam (Scaf).

I presume the fact that I will be running 20's that it will suffice and not cause any issues?

PM sent Jonn

Doing the maths, 17" is 431.8mm plus the tyre which is 60% of 185mm (111m) X 2 comes to a diameter of: 653.8mm

19's or 20's should have the same size diameter, bigger rim has less tyre height.

Sam if there is any remote chance that it will fit your car, then I will naturally bow out with you having first option.

Unfortunately if it does fit the GTS Stuart Lincs has first refusal.

Stu is a descent chap I am sure he would consider loaning it if you leave a deposit?

Pretty sure it does not fit a GTS though, sorry.

Not sure if this will help you but vredestein do a collapsable space saver tyre. Its sold under the space master name but they list the QP version below it doesnt say which QP it is :

S, Maserati Quattroporte, Mercedes-Benz SL
205/60-17 99 P Audi A6 Allroad

From what i can see they are around the £100 / 150 euro mark on old ebay pages i have found them on.

I can only find one current ad which is linked below

Curious to know what the final result with this spare was, ie does it really fit a GTS.
Im still on the prowl for one, so assuming this does work at least i know whats a sure thing, rather than waste £ as I did buying a Mitsubishi GTO one that didnt work!
As an aside, I have put my spacers back on, so I would assume that any clearance issues may be helped by this?

Thanks
Neil.

John, I am happy to accept Matts view that it won't fit my GTS, so no worries at all.

The only fly in the ointment is if I buy a Strad I may keep it, but it will be available to all as a forum loan wheel for Euro trips.
