Issue with 2005 Coupe Gears following F1 Pump + Relay Replacement

Hi all

I've been having intermittent problems with my Coupe where after reversing the car out of a parking space or following a lot of downshifts the gear would go into Neutral and CC light would come on. I'd turn off the car, wait a couple of minutes and would go back to normal. Otherwise, no slipping whatsoever when driving the car, clutch is showing as having 60% life remaining (I know its not 100% accurate).

As a starting point, ended up replacing the F1 Pump + Relay + new F1 oil (bled the system and replaced).

The car now does something very strange: it does not go into 4th gear.

Sequence is as follows when shifting up: 1 > 2 > 3 > slight hesitation > 5 > 6

when shifting down: 6 > 5 > N (then I have to manually shift down) where it will either go back up to 6 if I'm going above a certain speed or 3 if I'm going below a certain speed then > 2 > 1 with no issues.

If I double shift from 3 to 5 it works fine and the same from 5 to 3.

Does anyone know where I can look next or what the cause may be? Is there a gearbox learning process that has to be done following an F1 pump change?

Is my clutch gone??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think if it was the clutch you would have more gear problems not just 4th.
To me it reads of an actuator issue which could be a multiple number of causes.
An SD3 gearbox check would be my first port of call to understand the pressures and bleed rates as it sounds like its trying and then giving you 5th as a backup.

We tried the gearbox relearn on the Leonardo tool and no luck - still doing the same thing.

The mechanic is still unsure whether it is the clutch, and had mentioned that it could be the actuator. He's quoted me approx GBP 1,000 to diagnose the actuator which is super steep?

I'm still unsure whether I should purchase a new clutch set or go down that route.

Any ideas welcome!

That is expensive.

I recall a small Co. Used by Wheeler Dealers who refurbished a 4200s actuators... for not much more than your quote for diagnostic

Had that problem with 5th gear right after buying the car years ago. Sometimes it did manage to select 5th, but it sounded bad.
As if a synchro was shot. Very often it did not do 5th, went back to 4th. Did som Road tests with a mechanic listening near the road, while selecting 5th.
He was sure indeed 5th gear synchro was shot.
Wich was hard to believe with a 40k kms car.....
But in the end, we changed the complete gearbox, wich solved the problem. But...maybe it was just the hydraulic selector and not a synchro...who knows.
The new box came as a complete unit, so the old selector was not re used.
The old box is still here, waiting for internal inspection.
But that is no job for a non gearbox specialist I am afraid.
