Hi Jay,

I have a heavy peppering of stone chips on the bumper and a lesser, but by no means lonely number on the bonnet.

What's my best course of action?

Any pointers appreciated.

Cheers, Miles.

Miles, if you have a solid colour it might be doable by wet sanding, which basically means filling the chips with paint, letting it harden then sanding with very very fine wet and dry (with lots of water) I would not attempt it on my own car, but a professional would be able to help you out. It then gets polished up, and you would never know.

If it a clear coated metallic, its a respray only. There is a Road Rash repair from the states, but I never trust these wonder cures!

You are right not to trust these wonder cures...
I bought this exact kit, have tried twice and did not get good results...
maybe it is just the way I am doing it, but I tried to follow the instructions and it certainly did not come out looking like the photos!
Regards,
Enzo.

Hi Matt, Grigio Nuvolari, so I suspect a professional paint-job of one sort or another. Still, any advise and experience welcomed. Cheers, Miles.

I have Grigio Alfieri, and it is the most difficult colour ever to match. Enz, you have confirmed what I suspected, so feel glad I did not waste the money.

Would you guys put any trust in the folks from chips away, or would it beter to save the money and look to a professional type service?

Im firmly in the good body shop camp , i know that chips away are run on a franchise basis and therefore it depends on skills of the individual that turns up, my personal experience of them is that they screwed up my old favorite merc clk they resprayed a very light scratch which bugged me , now i have the rear quarter panel a different shade to the rest of the car i would never use them again , but some others have put a positive side to them , im afraid my feeling is you take your chances with them and possibly save a couple of pounds , whereas a good body shop would generally be spot on

I'm with Loz. Although it cost more a good reputable body shop will be able to sort your pride and Joy out so no one would ever know....I have had the same experience with chips away where they just never matched the paint and eneded up taking to a body shop in the end anyway.

We had a local Chipsaway guy down here in Chichester, and he was amazing. If he did not feel confident his work/match would be 100%, he would not do it. He left in the end due to poor health, so if you can find a good one, yes, but I suspect as the guys above have pointed out, they are few and far between.

Did have, hes retired now due to poor health, so now I send my car to Ross Packards in the New Forest, Emblem and Meridien use him and he knows how to blend and mix the Maserati paint like no other.

I have one solitary stone chip on the bonnet and it is bugging me........seems a bit extreme to paint the whole bonnet so what should I do????

Best to ask around UM, if needs be ask the nearest quality garage who they use, look at his work on their cars on the forecourt,

I did the same with my local indi and they gave me details for a good bodyshop and also a detailer in my neck of the woods, so hopefully HR Owen will have similar recommendations.
