Guys,

As you know I drive stupid miles in an overloaded van around this bejewelled isle making repairs and inspecting all sorts. On my way home tomorrow the van will crawl past 150k on the clock and I guarenttee it will do so in limp mode as the engine is shot... The centenary trip is going to take all of my war chest this year and is untouchable, I can't run to a new or replacement van this year and that's that. So the option I have is to buy a low miler engine from fleabay and suffer the risk it is actually no better than the current or I take mine out and rebuild it over a few weeks of evenings and weekends for a lot less folding but a lot of precious time. I have the skill and ability to undertake the latter and enough local companies to complete the likes of rebooting and grinding big ends if needed. So is it worth rebuilding a stock 1.6 HDi that could be got from almost any pug, Volvo, Citroen, Ford or Mazda...

If I'm to take it out of use for some weeks I need a replacement and Tuesday I was offered a cheapie that would do: the most senior member of one of my 'clubs' has given up driving at 98! His car is mine for £250 if I want it, it is 13 years old but has just 32k on the clock, one careful gentleman owner and is serviced to an inch of its life (every 2,250 miles or there abouts). What's not to like? It's a Rover 25 albeit top spec.... Would any of you if needs must???

I would, it's a couple of tanks of super unleaded and would owe you very little. Nothing to lose!

personally I'd go for the replacement engine route. Find a cheap donor that has an auto box (if they do them for these engines) in a medium milage car. Remove the engine and sell off the rest, or if the shell isn't worth anything scrap it. t'is where I get BMW engines from.

I'd never purchase an engine without the car unless I was getting it for pocket money. Then I rebuild the engines before the ones in use go bang.

Probably not much use as advice - but I'm in a contributing sort of mood :)

No question Newton, I would take the cheapy car and use it while you rebuild the engine. That Rover will sell again for at least what you paid for it, surely? It's the sort of thing I might even buy from you as a station car for Susie around Wembley...

Nothing wrong with bangernomics. It only has to see you through a few weeks and if it's been serviced that regularly it'll likely be a peach. You'll probably make a profit when you sell it on!

All sage advice guys thanks. I suppose it is inevitable to go for the 25 it's how I handle the van engine that I'm pondering.

You have plenty on your plate already from what I've seen, Newton. And remember the maser sat for a while once you'd started the job, so the DIY option may drag longer than expected. Not saying it will, just need to have contingency if it is out of action for a long time.

Well I bit the bullet yesterday; I have to be efficient in my work and I need reliability. My options are to buy a used engine and trust it has been serviced - not ideal, I could replace the van altogether - not an option this year. I could buy a banger and spend a couple of months of weekends and evenings rebuilding my engine. Which is doable but time impractical.

Yesterday I put a deposit on a fleabay purchase of a complete engine and gearbox with (negotiated) all the ancillary parts including turbo, injectors and TB. The best bit is it has genuinely done 2 miles!!!! The vehicle was being delivered and fell off the transporter!!! It landed on its roof and was written off...

I can swap this out over a single weekend and get effectively a new van out of it. It has eaten a chunk of my Italian fighting fund though.
