That couldn't have been more perfect, a bright blue sky with a few clouds for contrast , I hope its final display is as spectacular, not some dreary day with low cloud
I'd be up for this. First saw a Vulcan at RAF Mildenhall as a 10 year old. The two things I remember from the day were the sheer noise of the Vulcan at take off and the speed of the SR-71 take off and fly past
The 60s were the time for design, men in tweed suits smoking pipes designing things with pencils and huge sheets of paper, everything is just a development these days.
The place to watch it is in Dartmouth this weekend. If you can get a place it is in a bowl and you can watch the show from above and it is a unique perspective.
A bit ironic really that we all clamour to see a weapon of war - that if it ever had to do the job it was designed for its pretty likely none of us would be here to watch it again
There is something compelling about listening and feeling the projected military might of a jet fighter - somehow it detracts from its purpose of delivering violent and deadly destruction to its intended target.
It will be a shame to see it go - I sincerely hope we can continue to see fast air perform at shows despite the recent tragedies that have happened
Incredible and very Heath Robinson mission but interesting sentiment from the guy who actually flew the plane about dropping bombs on people. Considering what he could have been doing if there had been a nuclear war it's a bit odd. I suppose by the early '80s that threat had receded and they never envisaged themselves flying in anger as it were.
For those Oop Norf or with a free weekend disappointed about not seeing the Vulcan on Saturday, it's due to display at the Yorkshire Air Show on 26 September. This is at what used to be RAF Church Fenton which is between Leeds and York.
