Limited Slip Diff?

Do, or did any, 3200s/4200/GSs ever come with an LSD?

If not, are they available for retrofitting?

Just asking as I have a Quaife ATB in both my 156GTA and 205GTI and it makes a world of difference. Much better than traction control.

Not as far as I'm aware no. The 3200 AC had the ability to turn off traction control altogether for track use.

I thought the 4200 / GS *all* had LSD. Hence the MOT not being done on the roller brake tester

The 3200 GT certainly has a LSD and i am pretty sure the 4200 and all the other models too. I don't think any of the current line up don't have them. The shaft seals get worn and you have to keep an eye on them leaking. Otherwise tough as old boots. hard to use them properly with the ASD switched on as it tends to kill the engine off long before you are srabbling for grip. And the reverse is also true that with the ASD off you have much bigger problems than the LSD will fix :) it helps for sure!

Ha, so the answers are "no", "some do" and "yes"!

Any evidence? I agree it is hard to tell with ASR, when I am driving the Alfa such that I need the LSD I switch the TC off.
Is that why the ASR on the Assetto Corsa is disable-able?

Sorry MAF260, I typed as you answered.

Thanks for the confirmations, that's good to know.

Looks like I will be buying your old car...

Glad to hear she'll be staying in the 'family', beautiful car that got me into the marque. Post up some pics when you get her.

i can also vouch that she is fitted with a LSD, found out when I switched off the traction control for the first and only time!

I am certain that my 3200 GT Assetto Corsa has one fitted. Confirmed on several mountain passes recently ;)

I was always under the impression all the coupes came with LSD, I know both my GS did.

If you can be bothered to take out the gearbox and break it down, you can turn the plates in the LSD and tighten them up. Stops the chatter, but it's expensive on labour. If you have a bit of gearbox slap (not at all uncommon) this is usually a bit of play between the crown and pinion. The left and right register rings are usually the cause, though you can do what Maserati did and just put a rubber blanket around the gearbox! Typical Italian lateral thinking.
