Pretty sure its old hat in EFi.
Without getting into closed/open loop...of course the O2 sensor data is used with a fuel table..It will have been tuned to a stoichiometric optimal, what Id call a base map.
Variations are what I mean by trim tables...
Always happy to learn more about how my car works, of course...

Found these on a Mercedes forum - maybe of use:

Although a "repaired" working clock wasn't shown.

This is standard in the Bosch ME7.3.2. There are short term and long term fuel trim numbers. These are stored by the ECU and used to trim the map. The short term trim is used to monitor the lambda reading and injector pulse width and adjust. After a period this is written to the long term trim and the short term reset. The cycle is then repeated.

An early sign of lambda degradation is an increase in the long term trim. But you lose this number for a short period after a battery reset. The LTFT applies to both the base map and closed loop operation.

Nice one.:).
I was starting to doubt myself after pouring over 4 pages of data from an SD2 data grab...
It seems it certainly 'seems' has a learning protocol ( and window ?), and a warm up protocol...much more I wasnt able to positvely determine for myself (cos I just aint literate enough !)
