I don't *personally* think there's much to be gained by further participation in this. Logic, not stats will not sway either side. I shall quietly move elsewhere.

I always knew asking a question, however tangentially, related to cycling on a petrol forum was going to be trouble, I just never expected it to descend into this level of 'us and them' so quickly. I had hoped that if there is an official Maserati sponsored cycle team out there some of us Maserati fanatics might know of it.

Newton. Thanks for your reply. No, I don't take offence, I haven't personally lost anyone but the bereaved families might not be so sanguine about your suggestion that the victims have been throwing themselves under trucks. I fully take your point on the Bow roundabout and I think we are both in accord on that one.

Zagatoes, your post could have been written on a cycling forum, just replace the word "cyclists" with "motorists" and everything you say is equally true.

Oh and I had forgotten Cyclists wearing headphones, how can they possible know what is going on around them if they can't hear due to the tunes playing in their ears!!!

I would never cycle with earphones, nor endorse it, but it's not really worth getting upset about. Read here how little attenuation is caused, compared to a normal car interior. http://rideons.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/an-ear-on-the-traffic/

But in common with most motorcyclists I do wear ear-plugs, I actually have custom made ones. I will also soon be changing my Arai for a Schuberth because the latter has superior sound insulation. Do you equally tar all motorcyclists with your cyclists brush?

I'm afraid I don't know what the logo represents.

Oops! Sorry I think I'm in the wrong room.

I may start my own thread called "All cyclists are tw**s" and see if it descends into an argument over the influence of motoring related trademarks and their use as designs on contemporary sportswear.

Apart from the bit about paying road tax and insurance.

I really don't have an issue with cyclists who are sensible and follow the rules of the road, unfortunately there are many that don't. I get equally as annoyed about motorists who think the roads are for them only, especially professional drivers who should know better.

Recently on a quiet Sunday morning in Coventry, I was stopped at a red light and watched a cyclist ride up the inside of me and straight across the red light. When the light went Green I proceeded passed the cyclist only to get a red light at the next junction. Guess what the cyclist did exactly the same straight through the red light. This happened at 3 consecutive junctions.

After the 3rd time when I passed the cyclist I slowed down to have a chat, being in the SZ I was on the right side. I asked politely where in the highway code did it say that cyclist could ignore traffic lights. Needless to say I was blanked but that might have been due to the music coming from his headphones that almost drowned out my radio. So I stopped and opened my door which forced the cyclist to stop too.

We had a little discussion about the relative merits of cycling, I am not sure we got to any agreement but he was clearly aware of my views.

The road is for us all and if we all abided by the same rules and respected each other it would be a much safer place for everyone.

I have to agree with that Zag, but giving cyclists a bit of room to swerve past the mass of potholes we have, is as important..!!

Zag, I have three vehicles in my garage, I pay plenty of VED. Most cyclists are car owners. Also there is no such thing as road tax, that was abolished in 1937, the roads are paid for by general taxation so even non-motorists are paying for the roads. http://ipayroadtax.com Also the number uninsured and untaxed cars is simply shocking.

I am in complete agreement with you on red-light-jumping. I agree with you challenging the cyclist in your story, he needs to understand his actions are wrong.

I would like to see the police taking a zero tolerance approach on this, I would be happy to see offenders having their bikes confiscated and crushed. Do you know any motorists who would be willing to have reciprocal enforcement on motoring red light infringements?

We all have anecdotes, we could probably trade them ad infinitum. Just this morning I was cycling my five-year-old to school. A woman in a Passat intimidated us into the kerb and rev'ed past us. It was hard to understand why because there was an obvious red light 50 metres ahead, so there was no point shouldering past us, but when she got to the light she occupied the whole ASL and bike lane. I would normally have let it pass, it happens all the time, but given that she had just pushed us out of the way to get there I pulled up alongside her and asked her if she knew ASLs are for bikes. She gave me the same blank look you experienced.

Like you say, all we need to do is obey the rules. I was obeying them, I would be happy if she did too.
