MC Shift gear box - issue with 6th gear

Hi all,

First day today that I have had a chance to do more than 50MPH on th Stradale.

I noticed that the gear box refused to shift into 6th, and I am pretty sure that I had sufficient speed to be in 6th and could also see the green arrow flashing as well. I was on Race mode and I tried it several times and th gear box just refused to move into 6th. It was then ok after around 5 or 10 minutes and was ok when I was driving home.

I have already booked the car in with dealership to have a couple of minor issues resolved before warranty expires, and will also mention this issue to the dealer, just wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Thanks.

Not anything to do with Race Mode? Worth trying on normal mode?

This is a fair shout, it is does it in auto then it might shed some light.

I have never experienced it myself.

If it sorted itself out then it might be one of those things, but if it was a selection / actuator issue it will have stored a code.

Thanks all. I actually tried it in sport, and it was not shifting to 6th as well, did not try Auto mode however.

The car has done 22k, and I had a full inspection carried out as warranty expires at end of Jan, clutch wear was at 30%, so probably wasn’t the clutch, and could not reproduce that again on the way home from Brooklands Museum.

I am going to try again tomorrow, but hopefully dealer could see the code stored when I bring it in next week.

Is the car still 'cold'?

If the car has warmed through and you're doing 50mph or so, then if it doesn't shift there's possibly something wrong.

If it's cold outside, you've only been driving for 2 mins and you're doing less than 40mph, then it's not going to shift into 6th...

The car was definitely warm, MC-R was shown and I would have already been on the road for at least 10-15 minutes. With the little green arrow flashing, the car was ready to shift into 6, so not sure exactly why she refused to shift up into 6. I will try it again.

Happy new year everyone.

Happy 2019 all.

I have just tried it again, I think the issue there might be the green arrow asking me to shift up to sixth a bit prematurely. The handbook states the early shifting indicated by green arrow is to improve economy. I think it might be flashing a bit too early. Just tried again and arrow was already flashing when the car was travelling at around 40 MPH only.

For those of you with MC Shift, could you try and see if you observe the same behaviour?

This would give you an excuse to drive on New Year’s Day :)

If it will go into 6th but only at a higher road speed then I don't think you have a problem. It would not be a huge surprise to learn that Maserati have programmed the arrows a bit on the funny side.

Mine doesn't have shift arrows and I tend to keep it above 2000 rpm (quite a lot higher if possible!) to avoid labouring and ensure the clutch is fully engaged (I have no evidence for this in higher gears, its my choice). I would ignore the nanny state arrows and enjoy your car!

I suspect that race mode won’t allow up shifts if it would result in too low of an rpm, as the drop in torque is in contradiction to "race mode".

My Vantage would have me keeping the revs at around 1500 if I did what I was told by the change-gear nanny. It generally wants me to be two gears higher. Stoopid fing. Hopefully your Strad is being just as daft and you can happily pay its wishes as little attention.

Looks like it is just a daft setting of the gear nanny being programmed into the car.

Thanks for for the comments guys, I will just ignore the green arrow, but will mention this to the dealer when I bring my car in next week.

In Race mode, driver should not be asking to up shift until 7000 rpm :)

Exactly. In fact, should you attempt to do so, the info display should display a message saying "take car to dealer. Leave it there. Take bus home. Buy Berlingo instead."

I have a MC Shift and it will easily shift into 6th on 100kms (60 mph ) on auto or MC Shift mode. Despite the speed I change gears lowest at 3000-3500 rpm and it works perfectly
