So sad this reading about civilians signing up to fight for their country including an 80 year old man.
Such a brave and proud nation.

Then seeing video footage of missiles hitting residential apartment buildings.

But what really got me was dozens on men women and children making Molotov cocktails on an industrial scale.

The whole situation is so sad and unbelievable, my heart goes out to the innocents caught up in this mess. :(
Totally agree, who would have thought this could happen, allowed to happen, to the second largest country in Europe in this day and age, 2022. The idiots in the UK are panicking about the availability of petrol for their cars, while in the Ukraine they are concerned about petrol for their Molotov cocktails. Sort of sums things up !

Negotiation would be great and far better than fighting, but negotiate about what ? Additionally China are very interested in the potential outcome of this invasion, and the rest of the worlds reaction and response. China wanting to take back so called breakaway territories, Taiwan springs to mind, and their planned expansions in South East Asia. I wonder if back in 1939 the Internet existed would we be discussing a similar issue.

Quite a poor comment.
In this day and age, it shouldn’t happen. The way that other countries react could well be the way future wars are conducted. Ban Russia from SWIFT making every day transactions could well be worse for them than pointing guns and weapons. And as someone has said, China must be watching this closely. What a sad world we live in.

Thanks, that's fine, now define democracy to me, where you are given with one hand then it's all taken away with the other, even when you're dead, it's an illusion and people believe it..

SWIFT - Its pretty telling that the only real sanction that would punish Russia has not been implemented till now it would seem. Germany is said to be investigating ways of banning “certain Russian banks” from SWIFT so as not to cause stress to the global financial system.
Implementing this would certainly be a huge problem for Russia.

In an attempt to get their invasion back on the very tight schedule that the military built into their plans.
Putin authorised the use of thermobaric and chemical weapons yesterday.
Both are particularly effective in built up areas. Against people and buildings.
Apparently, knowledge of this development, caused the non-aligned state's votes in the UN security council
to change from a veto to an abstention. Leaving Russia isolated.
Anti-war protests have increased in Russian cities. With more cities seeing larger protests.

Whatever happens after this President Zelenskyy has shown more backbone than any other world leader that I can think of......they would have been out of there like a shot.

Actions speak louder than words.
Courageous , honest, inspirational.
Respect.

I looked at a television report earlier. Of an interview with a lone Ukrainian soldier guarding a bridge. Possibly on the outskirts of Kiev.
He looked like he ought to have been in school.
So I looked at flights earlier. Belfast to Krackow is only £70.
Then I took an honest look at myself and had to admit that I'm too old, slow and unfit to be more than a hindrance.
However, if my other plans allow it. I'm going to go out this summer and teach English.
I could teach them all that I ever learnt in Northern Ireland and other places. But, I hope they won't need that kind of expertise by then.
A whole generation of children is going to be very traumatised by what they experience and will need all the help other nations can afford.
(Sorry. I fell asleep while I was typing)

I think you're wrong , Boris would've used his training to get straight into the action

They've started the clone program to keep the government going , it'll be fully grown by the time it's needed

What I don't get with Putin is NATO was weak , it's not that long ago trump was bollocking the europeans for not pulling their weight and they weren't worried, we spend billions with Russia , why would they damage that trade by starting a war

They'll be getting their chequebooks out after this though so he's made NATO stronger by invading Ukraine

I agree, it doesn't make a lot of sense. I think maybe this is a 69 year old man that has been indocrinated since birth to support Mother Russia and the Soviet cause that now sees an opportunity to create a legacy. He knows that nobody is putting troops on the ground and that if he swiftly takes Ukrainian land, everyone will settle down and let him as the consequences are not worth it for most. The trouble is that this type of incursion and insult should really be challenged at every level, that's the right and moral thing to do, but to do it risks serious loss of life, global instability and lengthy fighting.

The power here lies with the Russian people. They can - and they seem to be - express real opposition to this. The risk to them is massive, Russia just rounds people up and sends them to Siberia, so the opposition on the ground should be supported and respected.

No normal person can really apply logic and understand what drives these sorts of people. The wealth, the power, the recognition has all been there for decades, why do they want more?

I hope that it is over swiftly, that stalemate wins, as it that that allows for calm.

One eye on China here too, they've been after Taiwan and HK for ages and while focus is on one thing, they might well try a push. Slight of hand. The greatest thing Kaiser Sozee ever did was to convince the world he didn't exist.

Your point illustrates perfectly, how fallible Putin is. How badly he has misjudged so many parties (groups) in this war.

Daughter working nights and the weekend at ‘The Bank’; guarded as usual as to what’s going on but says it’s more challenging/‘interesting’ than brexit.

Its all about legacy. And about the hand that fate deals you. However, that's for another time.
As I said a day or two ago. Putin will have some sort of calamitous health emergency shortly and his Foreign Minister, or perhaps someone less tainted by this debacle, may take over, until 'elections' can be held.
