MoT Fail on 3200

Benny will love this - sadly the 3200 failed its MoT - rear o/s brake binding and rear o/s handbrake not working
The latter might explain the lack of handbrake "on" light on the dash - it comes on with the ignition check but not when the handbrake is on.
Last year having driven it to the MoT garage it failed to start as the crankcase sensor threw a wobbly and needed a full lift recovery back home!
Are these easy fixes? The garage owner is an old friend - he will have a look but won't do any major works other than try and clean the offending parts

Sounds like the shoes friction material has come away and is rotating around in the drum, so yes, an easy fix but you will need new shoes I suspect which take a few days to get hold of.

Here is the brake guide:

http://www.sportsmaserati.com/showthread.php/181-Brake-Overhaul-Guide

Also check the cable has not become unhooked where it meets the shoe mechanism, it happened to me so I got handbrake on one side but not on the other.

If handbrake cable same design as 4200, then its damaged/corroded inside the cable sheath, takes a couple of hours to fix

Sorry to hear about the result but I hope it is fixed soon without too much pain & expense.
Mine is in for the MOT & service in a couple of weeks, I'm already getting a little nervous!

Sorry to hear of your woes RSm and, because the system is the same as the 4200, I won't have a dig! I hope it is easily fixed and she is back on the road in short order. If you take your time and adjust everything properly, they can be made to work well. All the best.

Handbrake has a few problems, shoes binding and the liners coming off is common, easy enough fixed, it is also affected by the pulley lever mechanism in the centre of the cable gets corroded and stop moving. The brake binding is a separate problem. This is probably just dirt or a tight spot in the caliper. The brake pads are often a very tight fit and if the fitter does not skim them a little to get a nice fit they can get stuck. Again strip and clean will do it most likely.

Oh, yes, take the pads out and clean the, grease the back and the guides and file the sides of the pads if they are sticky in the calliper.

All sound advice - thank you, looks like the hand brake has disintegrated, the garage reckons he needs to break something to get them off.
So it's back on the drive on a axle stands - at least it's sunny this weekend - trouble is I am away and the bathroom tiles are in the conservatory!

the hubs are hard to remove because you get a rusty lip on the inner hub surface which wont pull over the brake shoes. Worth trying to back the little geared wheels off as far as possible before forcing it off, and/or slacken the handbrake cable.

I know the 3200 is quirky and ceramic brakes are the in thing but really? bathroom tiles on the brakes?:saifi3:

The backplate is prone to corrosion and if it dissintegrates the shoes can come loose in the drum. There a 3 different backplate designs which vary in price from £20 - £250 (I'll bet yours is the most expensive) - I made up some stainless versions instead. The backplates are easy to fit once drum is off as the hub can stay insitu.
The rear cable will also be corroded and need to be replaced.

The cause of no handbrake on offside has been found.
After removing the discs (new ones coming) the little pin which connects the end of the cable to the actuator is missing.
Looks like only a 5 or 6mm pin - the one on the other side is still there but it's easy to just fall out there is no flange on it so I might replace both with a cut down bolt

You can't simply replace it with a bolt as when it's all re-assembled it needs to fit between the flats of the other part so needs be an interference fit in the hole and and flush with the female part once complete... A picture may make more sense :battered:

There does not appear to be any thing missing from the first photograph? The recess in the part engages with the brake shoe. the pin connecting the cable is in this first photo? I would have thought you need to look at the cable see if its free to move? if the small pin is really not in place it should have been in the drum? try David Askew for second hand parts.
