MOT testers

Hello

I know we have some MOT testers here, so a question for the experts if I may:
<quote>
I took my car in for MOT and service yesterday. At the end of the day I got a call: while taking it out for an emissions test, someone else ran into the front of my car, causing "significant damage". They need to sort out the insurance situation before they can start fixing it.

</quote>

Road test for emissions? Seriously?

TIA

I'm sometimes asked to take mine for a razz prior to the emissions test to ensure the cats are up to temperature.

Well, indeed. And in the pre-cat days, I used to take the Alfas for an Italian tune up (that was my excuse), but never had a car taken for a road test that I know of

OK guys the way it is:
Test the car as presented so if the car is dropped off the night before or first thing in the morning and its going to be tested at 15.00 its going to be cold so it won't go through a basic emissions test.
Us Mot testers have discression and if we are not sure on something on the Mot ramp its sensible to road test the vehicle.
It is a minimum standard safety test and doesn't mean the car is any good as people always think.
Mot is not the same as a good service standard.
If you don't want your car driven be sure to get it hot yourself and be there for your allocated test time.
If I'm servicing and not testing a car I always road test it first whatever it is.
My experience and ear don't miss a lot.
Phil.

Forgot to mention our cars with LSD need to be brake tested with a deaccelerometer to avoid damage.
So you need to drive the car for that.
I know last year a mechanic took a Lambo out and pranged it on a mot test and it was obvious he was pratting about and was fined accordingly.
People know what I drive and are happy for me to test there cars.
Good job they have not seen me on track.
Phil.

As Phil says, all Maseratis with LSD need a road test for braking anyway so it's got to out for that reason anyway.

Are you absolutely sure about the LSD thing? I was under the impression that 4WD cars need to be road tested because they are not compatible with the 2WD brake test roller machine and therefore need to be tested on the road.

Hence why this mans PAJ was wrapped during a "brake test".

It says in the inspection manual that cars fitted with LSD should not be put on the roller brake test

I'm not certain Contigo, but everywhere I've ever had one MOT'd, which is plenty, they've done a brake test with a thingy, which I know now is a deaccelerometer as Phil has so eloquently revealed!

On the computerised Mot system and its been going for a few years now when you log the vehicle in it gives you the specific vehicle details and it tells you how to test the vehicle in question.
The problem is testers becoming gung ho and being put under pressure and the quickest way is to stick it in the rollers.
If your lucky it brakes the rollers if unlucky you could wind the diff up.
Me I don't rush for anyone just ask my wife.

So, with regard to the 32/42/GS, it should not be brake tested on the rollers? and the computer system says this?
I know since I bought mine, it has been brake tested on the rollers, with me at the wheel for the tester...it didn't seem to be a problem, no funny noises!
Its just the same as braking say, one wheel on tarmac and one wheel on ice? one wheel free and one wheel having resistance?

You don't need to take them for a rag you need less than a 100 yds to use a deaccelerometer mate.
