MY FIRST YEAR WITH A 4200 GT.

Having had various interesting cars and motorcycles over the years, on a whim I decided to see what the going rate was for Maserati 4200's and what was on offer. At the time I didn't even think about checking things out on any forums. If I had, there is a good chance I wouldn't have purchased the car.

On the 29th November last year an internet search brought up an advert on Gumtree of all places. It was for a 2003 4200 GT with a years MOT, new tyres and battery and 24930 miles on the clock for £11,750.

This is the car. https://www.sportsmaserati.com/index.php?threads/4200s-that-have-been-stood.22771/#post-542822

Intrigued, I phoned and made enquiries asking all the usual questions and especially why such a low mileage. The fellow I spoke to was selling it on behalf of his father who had been a car dealer (first set of alarm bells sounded); the car was part of his fathers private collection and the car had purchased it as a Cat D. More alarm bells were sounding at this point! My initial thoughts were that the car had recently been purchased to to repair and make a quick buck, but this was not the case. His father purchased it some twelve years earlier, repaired it and kept it as a toy but didn't use. I was still thinking of walking at this point, but somehow I was still lured by the Maserati.

I asked about the original damage, and if he had any photos of it before it was repaired. Immediately came back a picture showing a dent in the rear bumper and slightly displaced boot lid. It looked like it had been reversed into a lamp post. Because the damage looked so minor, I asked why it had been written off when it was only a couple of years old at that time. It turned out that the first owner did not want it repaired and insisted it be declared "constructive total loss" to allow him to buy a new unmolested car.

I then asked for some detailed HD photos of the repair as well as all things mechanical underneath the vehicle. Back came 64HD photos and three videos covering everything I had asked and more.

After HPI and MOT checks (a big thanks to Phil at PK Supercars Edinburgh) and knocking the price down to £10,200, I decided to purchase it unseen or driven. I then had the car transported five hundred miles to my house by https://www.enclosedvehicletransportuk.co.uk/about-us I highly recommend this company!

On arrival, I was well pleased with the car for the price. Yes, it was not mint and required a few things to be done, but refurbishing is part of the hobby for me. It was a good purchase for me as I do the servicing and repairs myself, but it wouldn't have been such a good deal for someone if they had to rely on main dealer or independent servicing companies.

The only real pain in the ar$e job was the solid brake fluidic the clutch hydraulic system that I posted about earlier on the forum, and the problem didn't manifest until 250 miles. Apart from that it has been brilliant! It has just passed an MOT with fling colours and no advisories. I have covered 1800 miles in the car and will SORN it for the winter at the end of the month.

Total annual cost for major service, brake shoes and clutch master cylinder came to £765.18 all in. I'm well chuffed.

Roll on next year!

Is this the car that was somewhere near Ashford. I went to see a car that matches your description but walked away.

Great story, and well done in saving another car that could have easily become completely abandoned and split for parts.

You're right about doing things yourself too. Many parts are obviously complex and specific to the car, Skyhook and the CC box are probably the main 2, we both obviously score out the second with our GT's. I don't have the skill you've shown with the brake cylinder, but do enjoy a little DIY mechanics and hope that my own project 4200 on a budget continues with the same success.

Thanks for the kind comments Chris.

Please feel free to give me a shout if you need a hand at any time. I have my own machine shop at home that comes in handy now and again. My next project is to make a tool to facilitate easy removal of the gearbox filter.

Re the GB Filter. Maserati have changed the parts design making it far easier to remove.

I'll second that. Quite a little gamble buying sight unseen. Suspension parts alone could have rendered the car a moneypit...!

GT has always meant Grand Touring ?
Manual means manual. Like Brexit means...!! :p

It was a calculated gamble after an awful lot of communication all of which seemed sincere. Answers to my questions have been proved to be honest, and in discussion the seller volunteered information a few things that you only notice under very close inspection. Also Ian that delivered the car, phoned me when he picked it up and confirmed that it was good.

It was still a gamble though!

Thanks for mentioning this, but I have already purchased one.

The tool I am making clamps onto the end if the filter and allows you to rotate the filter while pulling at the same time thus making extraction easy. It will also have a built in drill guide to allow easy drilling out of the small retaining screw that is known to break.

Someone’s loss is someone else’s gain
Well I'm glad that Geo is happy with it. It was worth what he paid for it but when I went I went to see it the price was considerably more and the owner wouldn't budge on price. It's a long story but I would say that anyone would have been very doubtful and walked away as I did if they had actualy visited the place and saw what I saw. I had a 4 hour drive to see this car so I didn't go there on a whim. I have to say though that if I could have bought it for what Geo paid for it I would have bought it.

I sincerely hope you eventually managed to get a nice one atreu1. If you had bought my one and had to drive it four hours to get home, you wouldn't have made it before the clutch acted up, not to mention the irritation of the rattling rear roll bar. You maybe got lucking by walking away from it!

If you would like to pm me your number I'll enlighten you as to what I found when I visited the owner of your car. You may find it interesting.

Great story! Great find! Man meets Italian beauty, man gets seduced, man lets his heart do some talking, man falls for her hard, man buys her sight unseen! Rock and Roll!!! Fantastic! Good for you for taking that leap of faith! These are bullet proof! I remember seeing this car advertised too, looks like a fantastic car and winner winner, chicken dinner! Great stuff...Another one rescued and loved.
