Yes Matt.....but was there any evidence of earlier wear that you can deal, bar the complete instant failure?

P

This is it, isn't it. If there's been no warning that the pump is on the way out, there's little point in worrying. You'll be driving along and 'boom'
If there are symtoms however, I for one, would like to know them :)

Well...its more a point of interest...ie how well do they wear full stop.....never mind the oil pump letting go....?

No none, I believe the engine to be circa 50k miles and the pistons, liners, camshafts, heads and valves showed no sign of wear.

I would seriously consider adding the oil pump as a service item, say every 50k miles, just change it. Its about a grand so not that unreasonable. You could then have your old one recon'd then swap them every 50k and keep inspecting them.

Since this engine is shared with some Fezzas is there evidence of similar failures on those?

Well if there is an inspection plug, surely it can be inspected? Maybe a clear flush of coolent to check that end and scope the oily side?

I know theres a small access point, but can you see anything meaningful, rather than just squirting extra lube up there on the off chance? May need an indie definitive answer/view

I'd not be unhappy to see this added as a 50,000 service part (except mine is at that) if Maserati/Ferrari agreed it should be, I have no fear lifting my engine out and sorting it myself.

£1k part a service item? Hmm I think not, plus the engine out job, how many hours of labour, hardly what I'd call part of a service.

Think it was an all in price Nick.....didn't check the espares list prices......but if part £1k, plus a day of labour, different issue

This could indeed be a service item (replace), but don't forget to add an engine out / engine in labour cost to the parts cost. It's a pig to get at and impossible to work on without having the engine on a stand.

I suppose I am in a minority who are happy to pull an engine to bits and put it all back together on your own....

The part ALONE is £1,162 new. http://www.eurospares.co.uk/searchResult_one.asp?S=202976&TM=3&TMo=389&TA=1&TB=20923

PLUS labour of 8-10 hours at an Indie at £70 p/h (which is the low end for hourly costs).

You are looking at £1.9k to change the oil/water pump. That is NOT a service item in my eyes.

What this is, in my opinion, is a significant design fault. Maserati have already heard about it via Dealers for others it has happened to (http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk/m_49124/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm) but they have not done much about it, except donate a couple of new parts.

Also don't forget we've seen a bit of info on this topic before: http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/showthread.php/8237-4200-oilpump-failure-picture

I don't think there is much info to gain here, it is just a huge potential weakness of our cars.
- it might go at any time;
- it is not a standard thing to be checked;
- there's no way to check it without taking the engine out and taking the part off (which would cost £700+)
- if it goes it can be catastrophic.

Happy Tuesday!

Yeah...Maserati are well known to wash their hands of anything that fails on out of warranty cars...shameful. Its an item that should last the life time of the car, not 50K miles. Poor design, quality of construction/materials maybe less than perfect, in an ideal world, they should at least part pay. I wonder if someone like Mike who Matt knows can make an engineers opinion/report on it?
