One practical point about inspection before purchase...
I did not have the expertise to inspect the vitally important subframe on the cars I was interested in (I engaged with maybe 10 and got as far as a paid for inspection on 3). But I could test the ancillaries - electric windows, electric seats, radio, electric rear blind, sunroof, mirrors, air conditioning... the list goes on. These seemingly trivial things will not (unlike the subframe) put an end to your ownership experience but they will niggle. Parts availability (and therefore time and cost) to fix them will not be as good as we have come to expect from our ownership experience with mainstream cars.
But don't hold back.
I, for one, have found it well worth all the pain of the first time buying process and have no regrets. Every month I drive the car it finds a new way to delight me. Passengers love it. I still find myself just gazing at it, parked on my drive. It is a gorgeous piece of automotive engineering/ automotive art. It is by far the most enchanting car I have ever owned and I would not swap it for anything.
