Personally, I think Loz is wasting his life. In my opinion he should open a Maserati Indie. I think he would be guaranteed enough customers just from the help and advice he has given to all us lot :p

Its not as silly as it sounds, just think if core forum members represented an indie, for sure all the forum members will use them.

Awe shucks guys , but funny you should say that , been a idea of mine for some time as Matt will know , toying with the idea for some years now with opening up 3 fully equipped ferrari style workshops all in one big unit but seperate and independant of each other , to hire out to Supercar enthusisasts , many of which are able and capable of servicing their own cars if only they had the right conditions to do so , we all know that the servicing kits for these cars filters belts oils etc amount to less than £200 but they are often hit with bills in excess of £1000 at a dealer or £700 ish at an indie,

All ready sounded out the local mobile mechanics , who think its a great idea , as they turn down quite a few major jobs each week through lack of premises and conditions , if they could factor in a days hire they could increase there work load one could always offer a contract rate to regular users

It was my idea to hire out the workshops for around £100 for an 8 hour period , whether for servicing or major repairs as they would be fully equipped with 4 post hydraulic lifts , oil drainage facility, hoists compressors welding machines air tools etc together with a complete and comprehensive set of sockets/spanners all for each individual workshop

I could offer at the same time for maserati's 4200 and Gransports to do straight servicing and brake /exhaust changes and minor repairs including F1 pumps

Took me a while to find an insurance company liability wise that would take the idea on , as it has never been done before , but i could see this long term as a good comfortable return money wise but not a vast fortune maker , unless one was to Franchise it out , i have already 2 years ago secured several domain names my favourite and most likely rentobay.co.uk

Really ive been ready to go for sometime , just waiting for the economy to pick up and show a few signs of coming to the fore again , units and location are in abundance in MK and im keeping my eye on several tyre bay/kwiikfit style workshops that seem to be struggling that would be my ideal and easiest to convert , so who knows what might happen

what you reckon guys

regards loz

Hiya Locz. In paper it is a great idea, dunno how operational in practice. If you traverse any of the Maserati user forums, you'll see only a minority venture doing their own servicing (lack of skills, lack of confidence, whatever). In order for this idea to work given the investment you need to make (not necessarily much, but $$ in the end) you need to have the premises reasonably occupied/in demand throughout the year. Looks a bit unlkely. Think you need to make the numbers (maybe you've already done so) as to how many days/year you need the place to be hired in order to at least break-even, and align that with the potential # of customers, which again, won't be many.

A different proposition is to start an Indie workshop.

Just my 2c.

My sentiment too......When I started the thread I did so thinking along the lines of you starting your own Indie, not a workshop where I would get my hands dirty.

From the guy who has just learned to change a 13 amp plug :)

Sorry Guys , the tech side is way above me , Basic servicing brake pad/disc changes and logical stuff is my limit and as in all things in life best to know your limits , i'll leave the technical side to those who are so more suited than me , still my view that with part hiring to local mobile mechanics and or for high end independent inspections generally on weekdays it could be a paying concern , appreciate the hands on enthusiasts would want the weekends more than likely
