You would probably lose less on a portofino over 4 years than in the same time period with a Ghibli or similar german marque costing over 60k. And who will have more fun in that time.

Its all relative isn't it. I try to explain to my wife its the cost of ownership that counts and not the ticket price. With the Free Servicing and Warranty I try to convince myself that the depreciation is affordable , especially if the majority is not on finance. A local BMW garage offered me a 'great deal' - so they thought. Drive a 60k car for 6 months and a guaranteed buy back of 5,000 less if I did less than 3,000 miles. I won't lose much different to 10k / year on a 6 figure ferrari. Its all relative. To most people all these cars are bonkers. But it makes me and other forum members happy. Whats VFM is very personal.

Investing in property is probably the best financial sense. But I can't bring myself to buy places, rent them out, and hope in 30 years (in which time I have probably died of an MI due to overwork or a car crash in a maserati in drag) I can sell them to help pay for my care home.

You buying a care home now?

Anyway, the thing I don't understand about Ferraris' is the dealer margin. Sure depreciation is light but if the guys in the Next suits, Simpsons socks and Hugo Boss pants are taking £15k+ out of you in margin then that leaves little room for depreciation if you don't keep it long. Just saying...

Bob - I am completely with you on this. Even down to the Socks. This is an issue. When I asked off the cuff about perhaps getting a 458 in the not too distant future - and cost to change etc - they said they take £5,000 just to SOR it, but if 'little bits' need doing to the car this often adds up to another £5,000. And I am sure part ex as you say would be 15k ish kickback as a starter.

The key is buying one thats pretty rare and in demand so you can shift it if you want to move. There are no Cali 30s I can see under 105 on AT at the moment so I should be safe for a while. But a standard one, with the miles creeping up could be a harder proposition to move on.

I have to say the Salesmen at Dick Lovett's haven't been like the boss suit brigade that permeate mostly german sales havens. They have been refreshingly honest and I have great respect for them.

I agree with cost of ownership being the driver but if prices dive and that 185k become 150k or less I can't afford to reconcile that. It is unlikely I know but the risk is real and possible. I haven't got enough money to take that chance.

Much of my car buying/selling is fairly low cost, low risk & generally zero depreciation. It is a model that has worked for me with maybe my total outlay on my car passion (affliction) maybe 5-10k per year covering everything. I don't gamble or spend money on anything else so doesn't seem bad value really.

Now and again if something appreciates it could be a bonus.

Your model works well and I don't disagree with it at all. I also agree with bobs observations. If your affliction can be 'treated' by that method I am envious. My affliction I fear will cost me more. I have some relatively sense though. My man maths calculator has a cut off switch and I know my means. I wish I didn't have it. Life would be a dream then!

Barry, well done! I'm really pleased you've ordered a Portofino but even more pleased that they've sold out. I'd just about started trying to work out how I could afford one (I can't) so this makes things much easier. Your Lusso looks gorgeous, by the way. Pleased?

Still a raw Ferrari but so much moved the game on. Standing start at Millbrook we reached 184 mph at the mile marker. On chat it lights up like a jet fighter and so planted. The Portofino will imo be the most sought after model for a long time being all things to all men.

I agree. Portofino looks stunning. Just finished a drive in the sun with the Cali and still smiling. Only thing that let it down was the front which doesn't look aggressive enough. But they seem to have sorted that on the portofino.
