Took delivery of my first Maserati a few weeks ago - an 08 GT 4.2, with a mere 14k on the clock.

Why? Ummm...an emotional 'decision' that I'd had enough of bog-standard German boxes and wanted something different, always liked the GT and although I aspire to a Lamborghini one day (poster on the wall as a kid etc), this was a good step in that direction.

Now...having said that, after only a few weeks I can quite safely say that even if I do make it to the position of being able to get such a Lambo, I can't see myself letting go of the GT. It is simply gorgeous in every way. Its a pretty base model and light on the extras (heck, no memory or heated seats!? Whatever next...), but you know what, it doesn't matter. Its black with red leather (in v. good condition) and you can't ask for more in life!

But, a couple of questions... I'm not a real petrolhead other than liking the look of and driving cars, I have no mechanical background etc...etc...

i) on start-up, aside of the engine (!) there is what sounds like it could be a fuel pump whirring away for perhaps 30 secs or so. Is this right?
ii) I do get a bit of white smoke out of the exhausts when the engine is cold, although it clears within a couple of minutes - again, is this right?

Above and beyond that, any pointers on what I should look out for or what I've let myself in for - good or bad - would be v. much appreciated. As I say, it was an emotional decision and one that I hope - and thus far has proven - to be a good one!

Hi BigR,

A warm welcome to the forum and a great choice of car, congratulations, it sounds great.
1. Whirring Noise: Most Maserati's have whirring noises of one kind, or another, there are loads of pumps that pressure up, prior to and on start-up.
2. White Smoke; That's a bit of a concern, as it usually dictates that water may be getting in to parts it should not be. Keep an eye on your coolant header tank for level drop, if in any doubt, take the car in to an independent for a check up, although at only 14K it should not have issues. What is the service history like? If you want a local indie, have a look here: http://www.sportsmaserati.co.uk/sho...ti-specialists?highlight=Independent+Maserati

Hi BigR and welcome....sounds like your into Maserati's for the long haul

The whirring on start up is the secondary air system. It is running up to pressure and totally normal.

The white smoke on start up is normal, its over fuelling which means its re learning. Have you disconnected the battery or the car has probably been standing for a while and gone flat.

My GS (same engine) used to do the same then all of a sudden it went.

Enjoy.

Many thanks for both of your responses.

i) whirring noise - reassuring, thanks!
ii) the car wasn't used a lot for 3 years (3000 miles over the past 3 years) and then was with the dealer for a number of months (I think 3-4) and the battery was dead when I first viewed it. So, it sounds like that may be the issue, fingers crossed.

I'm fortunate that there are a couple of indie service places in my area (e.g. BHP), so although I can't imagine the car every going wrong (!), help is relatively closely at hand.

Overall, I fear I have been bitten by the bug on this. There are odds and sods that need doing on the cosmetic front e.g. a scuff on the centre console leather, someone's tried to break the badge off the back in the past, 2 wheels needed doing (not badly scuffed) when I got it - and my wife added a third 20 yrds into her first and so far only go in it... Plus a new set of mats as the previous owner must've worn stiletto heels at some point.

I've also got plans to upgrade the stereo - its probably the only real disappointment in the car as its a bit whimpy at best. Plus one or two things such as getting bluetooth fitted, an MP3 connector... But all in good time as I really can see myself holding onto this car for a long time, hence not scared of putting a few quid into it.

I'm quite fickle and have fair-OCD about these things, and the only other car that I've ever lavished attention on was my Impreza (full big gold wheels, blue, limited edition this & that), and I can see this one going the exact same way!

BigR,
Sounds like you have just a few cosmetic bits to sort out, we are all mostly in the same boat and pretty fickle about wanting things to be right and how they should be, they are a Supercar after all. Some have been known to wear stilletto's, but not in public. The wheel scuffing trick is a favourite of the ladies, it get's you to talk to them and they know it will annoy the **** out of you..!! Audio Systems have never been a Maserati strong point, "listen to the car, not the music", they have been heard to say.
Most subjects you have mentioned will have been covered on here at some point. Use the search bar at the top and you hopefully will find exactly what you need to know. If that does not work, just ask the question on here, someone will be on hand to help.
Cheers

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new car.

As others have said - both issues you have highlighted are pretty normal and non-issues.

Stop worrying and get driving! Im sure you will find that each Journey is an occasion.

Welcome BigR, sounds like you have got your answers already, now relax and enjoy the privileged position of owning one of these beasties... and remember the massage oil for your face cheeks cos that fixed grin will ache after a bit :)

Shilleto heel marks, low mileage.... not Louis Walshes old car is it?

Must be something about these cars, BigR... Mine needed a new driver's side floormat as well. Hmm... Well, I've had mine a year and I've avoided pull of the killer heels* so far.

* at least insofar as wearing them myself is concerned.

Enjoy!

Thank you one and all for your welcome! I shall endeavour to sort some decent photos...not least once the weather improves! It sounds like my OCD-approach to the vehicle will sit well around here though.

The weekend's coming so the stilletto's..... ooops! Wrong forum :as003:

Very very nice....many happy and safe miles.......I don't have to mention exhilaration as that occurs every moment you are in the pilots seat!
