Each to their own - But personally I don't understand the need to mess with the factory unit unless you live in the car and are on the phone 24/7 or searching the internet in private for wired stuff.

However there are number of options for the GT, such as the screen-overlays and I guess these will just get cheaper over time. And if your old one is faulty then your post is a good option. But I have no idea who developed it or reliability.

If it works and looks OEM in real life, and it’s plug and play, then it’s a great solution for keeping the car up to date and future proof.

However, I’m assuming it will only work with 2017+ models?

@conaero‘s CarPlay/Android Auto solution installed by Sports Italia is by far the best solution I’ve seen in terms of looks, functionality and respecting/maintaining the integrity of the original car. Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but that will work with the pre-2017 models?

They say there are 2 models, one for 07-15 and 17-20.

I get that personally don't spend enough time in the car to justify it.
I thought I'd share as another option as for anyone looking to change there's.

Thanks - sorry I missed that!

For the 07-15, I’d be tempted to go for the Sports Italia solution for reasons stated above but also I believe it costs about the same fully installed.

I wonder how much labour to install this solution… but if it’s DIY territory then a great alternative!

I have gen 1 from Sports Italia. Works ok, but I do like these newer looking replacements.

I think Aucar have better versions and seem to get good reviews. However, I'd rather listen to radio X-Pipe !

It's a lot of money to make the interior look more modern. I would prefer to spend it on new bushings or something more worthwhile.

I have the ACAR NAVI GEN 3. It's on Android 12. I hate android. But the OEM setup was so terrible as to be unusable, even for it's day. And I've had a number of clunker BMW infotainment systems; this was worse. The CD player in mine finally quit leaving me with a single analog input from my phone or the wasteland known as FM/AM radio (especially up here in the pacnorwest.) So, something had to be done. It's a moderately complex DIY project. Just a few tools are required, tons of patience and a flashlight (and good eyes). Took me two days because I went slow and deliberate so as to not damage the car. Now it's in, looks OEM and gets Apple CarPlay with it's nice maps and navigation plus music player and podcasts. For me it was worth it. Oh, and I modified NOTHING in the car, kept all the old stuff, down to the cigarette lighter so when I sell the car if the next owner wants originality he or she can have it all back.
