Dear new friends, may I introduce myself: (sorry for not perfect english, learned 45 years ago), 54 years old, from Düsseldorf in Germany, since 10 years Range Rover L322 specialist and driver, bought this summer a Maserati 3200GT, LHD,black/black/6-gear manual/188.000km = 120.000mls, normal condition, good price, driven since buying round 6.000mls, now came the first problem, will declare so good I can.

When driving normal, there are some (I believe) ignition misfiring, the car stutters a little bit, and above 4000U/min there is no full power. The car drives like a car afterengine-wash, with a moist distribution cap. The gasoline-filter is new, also the airfilters, the ignition-coins seem to be normal color (brown and dry). It seems sometimes, that there are only 6 or 7 cylinders in function. And today the starting was 5 seconds, normaly was immidiatly in one second.

If you have suggestions, it would be very helpful for me, best regards, Uli

Welcome Uli, does the car still have the original throttle body? - given your mileage/km they tend to fail around at 70-80,000 miles so surprised you have the km's you have on the car on original throttle body. I had similar symptoms which was cured by change of throttle body to contactless type.

If its not the plugs then swap the coil packs round from cylinders 7 & 8 and see if the missfire follows the coil packs.

As the misfire is on opposing heads, it would suggest that this is not a mechanical fault, more a firing or sensor fault but it does sound like a sensor/wiring as its unusual for 2 coil packs to go at once, so I would follow the leads back and check for continuity.

All the best and welcome.

Excellent choice of car, and colour. Sorry to hear your troubles, hopefully be an easy fix, good to see it with high mileage too.

Great choice as said and particularly the manual aspect of it!

could be either Throttle Body or Pedal Pot causing those issues. Normally a worn pedal pot will result in CEL as will a dying TB but from what you describe it doesn't sound like it is in limp mode (although reduced power and struggling to make 4k rpm does sound like it could be)

The other thing to check is the boost control valve (Pierburg valve) as these can have a bad electrical connection and cause the car to reduce boost and therefore lose power.

easy stuff first I say - you suspect a misfiring cylinder so I would check and source any issues from there first...........oh, and welcome to the Sport Mas family (subsection discerning drivers, also known as 3200 owners:excellent:)

Thank you very much for your first aid..., and the friendly words for my start. In this evening, after four hours, the engine became cold, and the first 10 minutes the car runs perfectly, after 10 minutes the engine stutters more and more, special in the fifth or six gear on highway with 70mph, tomorrow in the morning there will be the same procedere, after 10 minutes fine running, the problems will come. @to the good looking CONAERO, it is also possible to buy one new ignition coil pack, and change one after the other? But where is the boost control sensor placed at the engine? In germany´s maserati Forum M.ERDMANN, there is a actuell warning about the contactless throttle-bodies, it Comes from the distributer BOOMERANG itself from Luxemburg. Best regards, and I will inform you about News, because I like my Hobby! Uli

Welcome to the forum RR. From what you describe, your problem could be the "Knock Sensors", if going they will limit the rpm considerably and it will appear like a misfire, no power at higher revs at all and power will stop at about 3,500 to 4,000 rpm. If this is what problem you have, you have 2 x Knock Sensors, 1 on each bank of the engine..!!

If the car is hot, it starts in 3-4 seconds, if cold it starts in one second or faster! The knock sensors (Klopfsensoren) could be, but do they produce misfire stutters only if the engine is hot? My Problem Comes only when the car is hot.

@Parisien, my Range Rover L322 with BMW 3.0 TD Engine is car without any problems, only the airsuspension is a thema, also in the FullFatRR-Forum.co.uk

Yes the fact is only happen when hot means its less likely to be the coil packs i think. i presume there is no engine light on? The coil packs have error codes that identify the coil pack that's faulty. could be the RPM or CAM position sensor? these seriously affect the firing, however does not really explain why its only when hot.

RR welcome to the best Maserati forum for the later Maseratis, 3200, 4200, GS etc. The knowledge here is excellent and everyone is happy to help.

We too have an BMW L322 Range Rover and have had the odd issue or two but nothing that can't be resolved with the local specialist and a decent warranty. We had a P38 prior and that was a load of trouble but strangely one of the few cars we have made a profit on (primarily as we paid next to nothing for it in the first place).

RR, something is obviously warming up and if it is electrical, it's changing electrical parameters as the engine warms, I would be looking for a sensor..!!

Good shout Robert, could be MAP sensor. There are two sensors one upstream of the throttle and one downstream. The downstream is located on the bulkhead and can be located by following the outlet pipe from the plenum. The upstream is located by the relay panel on the offside front wing.

UPSTREAM

mapsenorupstream.jpg

DOWNSTREAM

mapsensor.jpg

The Bosch sensors themselves get clogged with grime and spraying electrical cleaner on them does help. I would remove them and give them a good clean.

The only other thing I can think of which gives funny idling is when the plenum chamber plate comes loose and this is worth a look. It usually results in a higher idle speed not a lower one but can give the feeling of hesitation.

Do you have a check engine or engine management light on the dash when the car starts this misfire? We need more info about it really.
