Hi guys,

Looking for suggestions on a daily, currently have a bmw grancoupe but want something a little different and have been looking at the QP 3.0td.

Anyone have one of these or share any feedback about them as a luxury cruiser/daily driver?

Thanks

Mike

A friend of mine has a 3.0 lt diesel QP VI and uses it to go between his houses in central London, Hampshire, and Italy. He says that for wafting from place to place it's great. But that driving it strictly within central London is a bit of a pain because of the size, the turning circle, etc. For that bit, and the looks, he preferred his QP V. So if you have much inner city driving to do, and/or regularly need to park in smallish spaces, the Ghibli would be the way to go.

My grandcoupe is a fair size to but I don't do to much city stuff mainly motorway etc.

I was looking at the QP VI or new s class both about the same size but I know the maserati is more exclusive as the s class is everywhere.

Guess I could look at the Ghibli as an option, what are they like for build quality vs the typical bmw Merc options?

I got the newest QP whilst my car was being fettled with. And you know what for a daily drive in town I too prefer the Ghibli.

It felt a tighter better drive. The QP to me just felt too wafty. Hard to describe. But I prefer my Ghibli.

Plus when I parked the QP on my drive almost 1/4 of the bonnet stuck out onto the pavement.

Paddles are pointless as is sport mode in a diesel for both cars. Plus they have no "sound" which is a big disappointment. I thought exhaust noise was prerequisite for all Massers.

There is no point buying the diesel. Buy a petrol Ghibli. It does 30mpg and holds it's value better, take a look around the classified ads and you will see that like for like age/mileage the petrol is worth £5-7k more. Besides, it sounds great in comparison. And petrol costs less. Petrol, paddles, 20"wheels. Done.

Hi , I chose a S350d over the QPVI as my to and from work 80mile round trip. Head ruled over my heart (unusually) and in truth not a difficult contest. Great deals available on new S class. Got dealer thorugh carwow saved nearly 20K on list . All round comfort , equipment , build quality felt different league......

I'm a year into my QP VI diesel ownership having covered over 15k miles in that time. It's my daily driver although I only need to use it a few times a week. On my second day of ownership I went to DMS Automotive in Southampton....
A few weeks ago I experienced the back of the latest S Class on both legs of a transfer from Rome airport to a hotel.

I would say the S Class is better screwed together and quieter, even at the 150KPH the driver achieved on the motorway. However, with heart overruling the head I would choose the QP. I prefer the shape, interior and the smile on my face every time I drive it. I would agree with the comments about city centre and parking the QP. If possible I avoid driving and parking the QP in cities. I have never found a normal parking space where the car fits. If you spend time in cities and want a Maserati saloon then the Ghibli is much more practical. I was given a Ghibli S when mine was in for a recall. It felt more like a sporting executive saloon, whereas the QP is trying to be a limousine with sporting pretensions. I'm fine with that.

Good luck with your choice.

Thank you for the feedback guys, lots of food for thought.

I wanted something different from the norm and that's why I am looking to change the BMW but I hadn't considered the Ghibli. I would prefer petrol over diesel and if the petrol Ghibli is able to achieve 30mpg I could live with that!

Interesting to hear the sclass feels better put together however being german not suprising.

I will check out the Ghibli, and take it for a test drive as the prices are quite attractive now so may have missed the best part of depreciation!

Make sure you hear a petrol Ghibli started up from cold. It's mega. There's quite a lot of well priced exhaust options for them too from the like of Remus, Larini, Quicksilver etc with switchable valves so you can make them into something surprisingly good. Make sure you try one with paddles too.

I will do, any must have options that I need to look out for?

If looking at Ghibli do you think better to buy a couple of years old or lease one new?

Extended leather is nice, the dash looks a little plasticky without it. The standard spec is good - keyless, nav, DAB, etc etc. Don't choose one with 21s unless it has Skyhook. Some would say that Skyhook is essential but I wasn't bothered personally. Most of the petrol ones will have some options where there are lots of diesels with zero because it kept the lease price attractive to not tick the boxes. If you can find a Rosso Energia car with carbon trim and red stitching, grab it with both hands.

Definitely go for extended leather and carbon fibre trim, they make the interior. Don't bother with Skyhook or sports suspension, the ride is poor with both on larger wheels. Mine has 20" Uranos and rides very well with them. I have the diesel and prefer the characteristics of it to either petrol model due to the bags of low-down torque. I found you have to wring the neck of the petrol cars to get them going. The S is very laggy, IMO.

Thanks for the feedback guys, guess I will have to test drive a few of them to see what suits me best, good thing is they seem to be a steal on the used market.

If I had the chance of a Ghibli or QP as the daily drive I think I would go QP......Every man and his dog has a Ghibli now (well not quite) But the QP is rare on our roads and when you see them on the road they still have loads of presence. As a used buy they do seem great value and it's the new face lift car they will only drop one way....or I must say I do prefer the older car to the face lift.

The Ghiblis certainly seem quite common. There appear to be at least two on our estate. That makes 4 Maseratis total (GT, 4200, 2x Ghibli) and amazingly, a Lambo!

I don't find the S laggy. I do find that if your revs are below the point at which the second turbo kicks in its sluggish. If you keep it in the right rev band power delivery is good.

That said there are some good delivery mileage pre-facelift petrol QPs around for Ghibli money. I'd have been tempted but it is big.
