I don't find the S laggy. I do find that if your revs are below the point at which the second turbo kicks in its sluggish.

Not really in the conventional sense of 80s turbos. It's not being in the power of the engine not lag.

I've had non turbo engines, Alfa Twin Spark, that were sluggish below say 3500 revs but above it good power and responsive. Likewise the Honda V-Tec would be sluggish low down but get the revs up and it's completely different. The petrol Ghibli has similar power delivery. Not turbo lag just sluggish below the power band of the engine.

I've found a majority of modern diesels even twin turbo's to be quite laggy. My XJ 3.0 V6 was a twin turbo with 275bhp & for me the terrible lag blights the whole drive/car.

I've had modern diesel Mercs & BMW's that were the same. It is why I can't bring my self to buy, own or drive a diesel any more.
It isn't a great receipe. No power at take off so massive lag, followed by a massive surge of power/torque with all h3ll breaking loose followed by a vey short period of niceness then in not much time at all until it hits a limiter at 4500 revs then all over again. Such a tiresome experience from my petrolheads driving point of view. What's the point?

It's like boom & bust economics. All or nothing. A to Z. Night & day. Right or wrong......I could go on. For me as a driver from a driving perspective they suck. Give me a nice V8 petrol any day. A supercharged one even better

Even my wife's Freelancer 2 SD4 is quite brisk but the same driving experience. Very tiresome. Would like to replace the FL with an electric car next as the school runs and local journeys will suit it better. Only get 26mpg out of it so a Tesla Model X would be a much better option. Just need the price to fall 50%!

A driver puts his foot down and accepts whatever the engine gives him, a fast driver keeps his engine in the power band and drives accordingly; it's a subtle but huge difference. I will always have a big diesel as the effortless waft of torque makes rapid progress a thing of beauty and the newer 7,8,9 and 10 speed boxes make it easier to achieve. For me, 8 gears are more than enough.

Btw, the new 335D does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds; think how fast it would be without the terrible lag you mentioned. ;)

I have no trouble at all getting off the line with my diesel Ghibli. If anything it suffers from lack of traction as there's a load of low-down torque instantly available, it's always driven in Sport mode with manual changes - sublime gearbox! I troubled a M4 convertible a lot yesterday. He started to pull away on a dual carriageway as I'd expect, but I beat him from standing start every time as well as a few mid-range manoeuvres! As we pulled up to a roundabout he was clearly unhappy as he dropped his window and said "this is just my day car, I have 3 Astons!". I responded with "me too and this is just a diesel!". The look on his face was priceless!!

Why would you have 3 Astons? IMO, one is one too many. Obviously a troubled fellow who needs to advertise how much money he has by telling any waif and stray that he comes across.

I think the newer 8+ speed gearboxes are essential on modern diesels. That was my issue with the XJ as it has the earlier 6 speed ZF rather than the later 8 speed.

These 8+ speed boxes will help to keep these big diesels in the very narrow power band they have. Trouble is you need to be in manual I expect as I can't see an auto getting it right all the time in auto mode. Each to their own but I personally just prefer a nice good petrol engine every day of the week.

The AMG E55K supercharged power plant is a cracking piece of engineering. In the S211 Estate form it has tons of torque, mid and top end power & loads of mechanical grip all the time. A 6 speed slushbox is all that is needed and it just works so well all the time in any gear at any speed.

Ok gents just as an update I drove both the QP and Ghibli at JCT600, both diesel spec as no petrol demonstration vehicles in. To be honest I was disappointed with both, in my opinion QP not at the same level of luxury as the S Class and Ghibli just seemed a bit bland.

As stated both were diesel so maybe a different story with the petrol versions but I was expecting a little more especially from the QP!

Think I will stick with the grancoupe for a little longer.

Was that the pre-facelift QP? If they were both the V6 the QP would feel underpowered compared to the Ghibli as they are both the same engine.

To me you need the V8 in the QP as it's a big car. The pre-facelift is lacking on luxury as well. Though the seats are great.

It was a 15 plate, interior was nice just didn't feel as high end as the s class to me.

Definately underpowered, I asked the agent can you test drive the V8 version of the QP and apparently Maserati won't allow it as it's an order only option! You have to buy and just hope you like it.

I've sat in that QP. It's nice enough but for the original cost needed a bit more.

I won't buy a car without a test drive. That would rule out the QP for me. Do they not want to sell the V8 over here?

Apparently not, I said the same to the salesman and he said the V8 is the same as the diesel just with more power and noise!

Stating the obvious but there are other differences which you won't know unless you can drive a used one. Not a good process if you plan on selling any V8 models.

That's interesting to know as apparently Maserati don't supply them so maybe a customer car.

I will get in touch and see if they still have it for a test drive.
