Hi Guys .
I have recently purchased my first Italian sports car .
It is a 2003 Maserati Spyder GT 4200 in blue with biscuit interior .
It has a manual gearbox with about 44K on the clock .
I spent ages chasing a TVR Chimaera I had set my heart on but after 6 months of the dealer giving me the run around I thought enough was enough and started to look around , I went through the Porsche phase and nearly pulled the trigger on a Boxster S but then , out of the blue I noticed the a Spyder parked up in my home town and I was blown away .
After some research I found a car that ticked all my boxes , V8 , convertible , nice colour , needed TLC so good price , manual and low miles .
A deal was struck and I went to view .
The dealer was in Loughborough, about 100 miles from my home , when I got there my first thoughts were , wow , what a gorgeous car and great colour combo , I was part X ing a VX220 so the Spyder looked huge to what I was expecting especially after driving the VX .
Funnily enough the seat was really close to the steering wheel and we couldn’t get it to adjust any further back , so the journey back was agony to say the least .
When I finally got home I put the Car in the garage and limped into the house , I couldn’t bear to look at it , took me about a week to start walking properly again , luckily we were going on holiday a few days later so that gave me the chance to forgive her and return for a fresh start .
That was about a week ago , so far I have sorted the seat and started removing the goo from the vents all with the help of this great forum .
Today I am going to tackle the roof , apparently it doesn’t open properly , but armed with info from you guys I am going to have a go .
So just thought I had better introduce myself and thank you all for your help so far .
I look forward to being part of a great group of people .
Cheers .

Mike .

Hi Mike
Welcome to the forum. That is a very rare car you have there, I think I have only seen about 3 manual 42 cabs for sale in the years that I have been looking.
I wanted to tick all the boxes you wanted but also the 4 seat box needed to be ticked. So I have also just bought a Barchetta!
If I don't ask someone else will............pictures of your new acquisition please

Welcome, one of the joys of car ownership for me is bringing a down trodden example back to where it should be, good luck with it.

Shouldn't the supplying dealer be fixing issues like the faulty seat and roof, under warranty?

Looking at the pics, it looks like a 2002MY car. (Rear ariel, plastic rear window, no V8 badges)
Nice colour combo!

I bought her on the understanding that she needed TLC , and I wanted a project , as long as I could drive it as is .
There are a few issues , the clutch bearing squeals like a stuck pig every now and then , the roof (as mentioned , but now it’s down I am happy ) the mirrors and seat refuse to operate , having said that I did get the seat and mirrors into the right position , eventually , the power mirror fold works ok though .
Not sure if this is a thing but there does seem to be a fair bit of scuttle shake .
Any way I like a challenge and the TLC was reflected in the price ???

The clutch squeal will be the spigot bearing. Its a clutch out job to replace so leave it until the clutch is ready to be changed.

Yes, that's right. They can get noisy, but it's not anything that causes any further issues really.
The roof system is a bit complex, but it's logical once you work it out. can you describe the symptoms? Do you get any reaction to the button at all? (must have handbrake on, and be on reasonably flat ground) If you hear the whirring of the pump, what part of the sequence does it stop at? Does it stop at the same place going down and up?
The scuttle shake goes with the early ones I'm afraid. It was addressed in the 2003MY and onwards by a series of chassis stiffening measures - (I think this mostly consisted of filling some of the box sections in the chassis, including the screen surround with some sort of expanding structural foam..)
Once you get them going right they are great fun and getting increasingly rare - here's mine featured from last year
