Guys my QPIV is in need of a starter motor. It's coughing and takes forever to start the engine. Had a new battery fitted as I thought this was the culprit but no, barely made a difference. Does anyone know whether this is shared part w fiat group and how difficult is it to get to it? Could a village garage do it?

The problem is I'm currently in crete with the car!

A new (original) starter motor from Valeo is about £400. Easy to fit, but not sure about availability in Crete.

Are these repairable?
They are easily repairable. Chances are the 'new' unit you will buy will be a remanufactured one anyway.
Try to find someone locally to do the repair, it's a vary simple procedure.
The problem is getting to it, as you have to remove the inlet manifold to remove the starter.

Can you not just order a new one from Maserati in Athens and have them send it? Or even Eurospares in the U.K. could send you one via DHL, which would take about 4 days for the standard service.

Unfortunately not straight forward. To import smth from eurospares into eu can take multiple weeks. Last summer took nearly 2 months for a set of parts to arrive (particularly delayed due to strikes in Germany).

Having discussed with the local mechanic the challenge seems to be getting access to it.

Challenging! The mechanic got a bit scared just looking at the intake.

One issue he sees from the outset is that the flanges that may need replacement when the intake is removed and where could these be found.

Couldn't these be made ,me wandering.

Great reviews for this place in Athens. Maybe he has a buddy in Crete.

Back to your original post:

“coughing”. What do you mean by that. That doesn’t sound like starter motor?

I was inaccurate using that term. It felt as if I was trying to start it with low battery. Hence changed the battery but no luck. It is now assessed and very likely is the starter motor

Great to read people all trying to help and offer practical solutions- I hope you get sorted.

If it’s likely to be the brushes in the motor, what would happen if your spayed it liberally with electrical contact cleaner, might that give a short term “quick fix” ( as you can tell, I am no mechanic but will try anything once ).
